Anyone got any good advice? I'm really talking about the Brembos on my motorbike, but also applies to the caked on dust on my Hopes and Avids. Brake cleaner aerosols (acetone based?) are ok for light work but don't do much for the really solid baked on stuff.

Any ideas?

brake cleaner aerosol ( after taking pads out) and a toothbrush to scrub them.

Pads out, then use water and an old toothbrush.

Pump out pistons a bit, more scrubbing then dry and lube exposed pistons with brake fluid. Wipe dry and re-fit pads.

I thought the brake aerosol cleaner was safe to use on pads? I've always sprayed the caliper and pads and never had any issues!? 😯

some brake cleaner aimed at cars contains a small amount of lube - this gets burnt off the pads on car brakes but can be hard to burn off bike brakes

brake cleaner designed for automotive use may be okay on motorbikes(dont take my word) but not for bikes, they contain a trace of oil to stop disc corrosion, which is easily burnt off by the temps car brakes get frequently.

So best of take the pads out first, then it should be okay

Pads out, extend pistons (using a fat washer to stop them popping out), then use silicone spray with a toothbrush and cotton bud to clean piston edges and caliper interior. Make sure all wet residue is removed before refitting the pads.

Don't clean rotors unless they've been contaminated with oil/grease.

They also need cleaning when you change pads.
