MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Hi, in a bit of a situation - drive side crank and axle won't come out.
Have taken off the NDS crank, axle wouldn't come through, tapped with a big spanner with several layers of oily ray to soften the blow.
No joy, so took out the NDS cup - this released it a bit and the spindle will pull through right to the end, but no further.
Its almost like the end of the spindle is catching on the drive-side bearings.
Any suggestions?
Paranoid that I have ovalized the end of the NDS spindle. Seems unlikely.
Just checked - spindle not ovalized - could easily put the NDS cut back over the end.
Internal plastic space is detached - have now removed - not sure if this is a good, or bad sign.
check the axle. as long as that's not scored, you're laughing.
need new bb though, I assume
(they always stick a bit when pulling through - I wouldn't worry)
Hmmmn, doesn't look scored at all. Just won't pull through.
hit it
push it back to normal position then pull it hard < oh err >
they can be a real pain sometimes ... my slx is a bastard to get through
the drive side bearing.
found that gt85 sprayed on the axle helps, but still need to "assist"
with a dead blow mallet !
Mine always needs a bit of coercion with a few gentle tabs using a socket extension as a drift
Do you put the socket extension inside the bb shell and tap through?
Despondent. Don't seem to be able to get it to go through.
You're not being persuasive enough...
EDIT: Surely now you could whip the DS cup out and then you'll be able to inspect it more closely to see what the problem is? +/- get the whole lot into a vise.
Rubber mallet. Most used tool in my toolbox.. 😉 hit it harder!
You need to give it some oomph sometimes, the weight of the mallet head will have a lot more force than a spanner. Sometimes they do need some effort. Plenty of grease on refitting.
Yes. Lip of the extension 'bar' against the edge of the axle and one big tap with the trusty camping mallet.
Put it this way. It went through the other cup OK, so I'd assume it's not massively ovalised.
I suspect that if you whack it the worst that'll happen is the plastic top hat will come out with it, and you might need a new BB. So unless you've got something irresistably bling in there, what's the issue. What BB is it?
Simon and the good folks at Nirvana cycles managed to sort it in the end.
The solution was to really whack it with a rubber hammer whilst rotating the cranks.
And I didn't get charged! #LBSLoyalty
