So, a woman at work has asked me a million dollar question, of course she doesn't want to pay a million dollars.
I have been asked for a "Not expensive" bike for canal towpaths that is light.
I did explain that my not expensive is probably not the same as her not expensive, hers is less than 4/500. I also explained that you get good quality, low weight, low price.... choose 2!
All that said... Vitus Nucleus?

That looks good value. Do you have a cycle recycle type place near you? If anyone wants to spend under £300 I tend to send them there.
Last year's stock of the Boardman hybrids at Halfords were being sold off at very good prices (cheapest model £500 reduced to £375 I think) if you can still find them (my wife bought one for commuting and towpath duty and I'm very impressed with the spec). BC discount too.

£315 after BC discount, worth buying just for the 1x11 drivetrain and forks alone... If not the whole bike (with a bloke saddle if required)! 😯
Oh Far Canal !
Voodoo Wazoo is £400 ish and giggletastic....

I saw the 456, but not sure 2nd hand is the way to go, whilst spec wise it's much better, I don't want to end up maintaining it in 3 months because she hasn't touched it and I suggested 2nd hand.
The specialized is crazy money!
Do like that Trott 1, that's probably high up the list, and it's from a shop that I can send her back to when it breaks. Kit list looks good, air forks up frong, hydraulic brakes. 27.5 wheels. Half decent drive train. Good effort for £350
Bought my 10yr old daughter the Laura Trott mtb recently, absolutely excellent value for money, pretty light and the gearing means she can spin up most things she attempts. Only thing I'm going to change is the tyres as absolutely shocking on anything other than bone dry smoothish surfaces.
