Hi,

A bit stuck, got a second hand bike with a hope headset. The silver bit with the cut in it seems to big, any ideas? Its the bit that goes at the top.

Thanks Neil

(apologies if I'm stating the obvious) it drops down around the steerer into the top of the upper bearing and should wedge in centring the steerer. Then you fit the upper cover and then spacers/stem etc and it should wedge in so needs to be a bit too big. And you may need to use some the thin metal shims to stop the upper cover seal binding but still sealing.

do you have the top bearing in the right way up?

And have you tried fitting the rest on top to push it in?

Yeah, looks right up to the point where I put in this bit...the silver bit is 1cm high and i can only get it about 2-3 mm into the bit below.

Isn't it supposed to stick out?
From memory I think it is.
I'd try fitting the rest of the parts and see if it tightens up properly.

why have you got what looks like the crown race on top of the top bearing?

I may have to eat my words about taking it to a bike shop....

Ha ha ha brilliant, haven't seen that done before.

The bigger shiny silver bit is your lower crown race. Your upper crown race is the matt silver bit.

What do you have at the bottom of the headset? Between the lower bearing and the fork?

Take a look at the first link rich posted

That is an older Hope headset, never seen one of those in the flesh but what you should have from the top down (obviously fit from bottom up):

Top cap and bolt
Stem
Spacers
Upper cover + any seals
Tapered split compression ring (the bit you are having trouble with)
Top bearing with inner taper up
Possibly a nylon spacer on that one
Top cup
Head tube
Lower cup
Lower bearing
Crown race (need to be bashed on if not split which I don't think it was on the older ones)
Fork crown

If you currently have a crown race on your fork steerer it will need to be removed before installing the hope one. Crown races are headset specific.

looking at the diagram above and a pic of an older one I think you should have two sections on top of the upper bearing below the spacers. The newer ones just have one section.

but that is definitely a crown race you have there - look at the marks from removal.

One problem is that I thought the older crown races had an o-ring around the outer edge as a seal. Are you sure that's a hope crown race?

Lay all the bits out you have in a row and take a picture. (except for the cups)
