Hello,
I'm thinking of buying a new frame and building up a bike. But as I'm a bit technically clueless, I need some help! Can anyone help me with a list of all the parts I'm going to need? Obviously I know the basic stuff - forks, brakes, bars, headset etc. But I'm trying to budget everything and i dont want to miss anything out! Also suggestions of a book or something that'll show me how to do everything - I've not done anything like this before... (Was hoping for some help from someone but have been told he's not going to fix anyone else's bike but his own from now on!)
Thanks
park tools do a good book, have a look on Chainreaction Cycles.
remember things like headset, bottom barcket - and tools! in my opinion having the right tools is a very good idea as they save a lot of hassle and damage. im sure others will disagree though, as some tools can be pricey.
just take your time when building up and make sure you buy the right size parts - cos different frames = differnt size components.
have fun!
Ben

Was going to say the same.

Rim tape, don't forget the rim tape!
damn swadey i thought i had it there! good call ๐
Caliper mounts/brackets...

Although the Park Book is great, the website and a laptop is my preferred method.

One area I'm very very careful with is the BB threads, last thing you want is to cross thread that area. So ask if the frame comes chased. Headset are another that reuires a bit of thread and bar or the right tools.
Oh and gear cable caps.
Wow, thanks for the list thomthumb! Sounds like the Park book is a good option too. Although i expect there'll be loads more questions... what is "cross thread?!"
Oh and I have a bell and reflector already, taken off my current bike when i bought it.
Do people think its a good idea to wait until i have all the different parts before starting?
And i'm based in swindon, although recently been doing most of my riding between swindon and cheltenham, so any offers of help gratefully appreciated!
cross threads means your screwing something in wrong, i.e the threads wont be matched up and this = damage, but you will be able to feel if it isnt going in straight, just dont force things.
as far as waiting goes, its up to you. i can never wait to fit new parts so i stick em on when i get them! just make suer you keep any small bits safe and the instructions for the part too!
thanks!
Just a thought - has cranks been missed off the list or am i being thick?
Very rewarding building your own bike
I find its the little thing you forget, like cable ends, zip ties, bar end plugs that you forget ๐
I bought a cotic hemlock & asked them to fit the headset, after that it was
pretty easy. the one thing that is a must a work stand,
I'm Gloucester based if you want any help - I know my way around a bike a bit
lexiekay - Memberthanks!

Not thick just different jargon
Chainset = Crankset = Cranks
(broken down further into chainrings and crank arms)
Ah i see, thanks for clearing that one up for me!
techsmechs - thanks for the offer, you might well hear from me!
Just got to start deciding which components to go for now.......
