My Handjob is broke. I've literally not ridden it for about 6 years or something, probably longer.

I'd like to ride it again. The problem is mainly the brakes. They're the original XT combined shifter/brake combo. Within a month of me getting the bike they went spongy. Had them bled by a professional, good for another month or so. Got frustrated, left it for a while, got the bled again, went spongy. Both brakes, roughly the same time.

I believe, these combos did have long term issues, is this true? Were they ever sorted? Or should I just ditch them and buy new brakes and shifters? Anyone else had similar experiences?

It'll get there, they always do. Someone with more wit than me is no doubt working on humorous reply.

OP, just ditch the combo and get new from the classifieds, the bike needs to be ridden.

Just ditch 'em Jon.

A pair of SLX Brakes and shifters and it'll be sweet as a nut.
Then you'll be able to [s]properly brake it[/s] ride it and enjoy it..

rightyo. Ta.

That looks like about £140 of investment. Plus the other bits and pieces it needs. That sounds OK.

Go with Deores & save a bit of cash. Just as good.

'tis a shame nobody chipped in with a gag
It'd been nice for this thread to "finish with a flourish"

You don't need to replace the calipers.. (if that helps with the budgeting)

If mrs MR looks at our browsing history last night there is much about prince alberts and handjobs. Why do manufacturers do this to us?
