[Closed] help needed swapping from triple ring to 1x oval ring

going to be building new frame up with old parts, and thought id take the opportunity to see how i get on with 1x9 for starters and also with an oval 'narrow/wide' ring.

stripped the triple ring and have my 2x4 sets of little bolts left, 4 of them with the 'round spacer nuts' on the end (yes ill clean it all up before going live) 😉

[img] [/img]

looking at putting the oval ring on tho, and its become apparent that the 'round spacer nuts' wont fit anywhere, and the oval ring has threaded holes. so..... the only way i can fit it is by screwing the bolts in from the other side (inner side) so itll catch the threads on both the ring and the spider. is that ok? and if so do i need little plugs or anything to tidy it up, or are they generally left like that?

[img] [/img]

and lastly, what orientation does the oval need to be. ive just left one bolt in at the moment and guessed, but have i guessed right? or does it need moving 90 degrees? is the ring exactly oval, so there are 2 bolt positions thats right and 2 wrong? or just the one thats right?

thanks

In your last picture at the 12 o'clock position there is a little tab that sticks out on the inside of the ring. Put this under the crank.

If the crank and the ring both have threaded holes, then the ring won't pull up tight to the crank.
I'd drill the threads out of the crank it it was mine.
(If I'm seeing it correctly)

There are no threads in the spider, however the oval ring should be in the middle position and not the outer. Move it over, put the little triangle behind the crank arm and bolt it up from the outside.

Shouldn’t the ring be in the middle position, the other way around and with the tab behind the crank arm?

Edit: Like he says^

The reason the ring is threaded is because it is too small to accommodate regular chain ring bolts.  The ring is machined to stand proud of the crank arms so the chain doesn’t foul on them.  At least I think that is what I’m looking at.

if this is now how it should be, my only remaining question is about the size of the bolt heads/flanges?
theyre only slightly bigger diameter then the holes, so im a little wary that if i tighten them up nice and tight they may chew up slightly. are there such things as crankbolts with a bigger diameter head or will they be fine?

rubber buccaneer, i didnt entirely understand your comment, is this now what you were saying?

I think but am not 100% certain you have the chainring the wrong way around.  Does the other side have a lip around the chainring bolts that would locate in the chainring bolt holes on the crank?  As you have it now will a chain even sit on the chainring over all of the bolts?  When I get down the shed I’m going to take a look at one of mine

spot on RB, it was the wrong way round! the video makes perfect sense and ive now swapped it.

triangle tab behind crank....

from the front....

and, correct way round showing how it now pushes off the spider so theres room for the chain. i hope 😀

thank you all very much, extremely helpful.

just putting it all back together again and want to check my chain length before going live.....

now i havent got a big ring up front, i guess i need to take some links out?

so..... am i right in thinking i put the chain over the oval ring and the largest at the back (not going through rear mech) and then add 2 links and split it there? that about right?

thanks

Big big plus two usually works. If it's a fulls sus then you might want to check if you get chain growth under full squish though.

Maybe. Try it without first. And as said above if it's FS then you will need more than if it's a hardtail.

yeah i spose i maybe worded it badly, i know i dont need to take any out as its just like sitting on the middle ring of a triple chainset as before, i spose im just asking should i....

smoother and betterer through the mech the shorter it is? dunno 🙂

EDIT: oh, and hardtail.....
