[Closed] 3M 2228 rubber tape - equivalent?

[#11480898]

Starting a frame build today and for once I’m after something tidier than the old inner tube chainstay protector. Seen the 2228 tape recommended but I cannot see it under £20 a roll; is there an equivalent from a B&Q or somewhere similar for a fiver??

Ta.

Marsh Guard Slapper Tape is a better version of a sticky tape for less money, but I use self almagamting tape from Screwfix (£5) works fine as long as you want to wrap a tube.

I have self-amalgamating tape on one bike's chainstays and 2228 mastic on the other, both do an OK job but the self-amalgamating tape is thinner and gets torn up over the course of a year or so.

It looks like that Marsh tape is more expensive when you factor in the length you get?

I think the 2228 is good value when I can do a chainstay, undercarriage and some other random bits like mudguard mounting areas with a roll. And it's extremely satisfying to apply IMO.

Yeah I don’t want anything thin; pointless to me. I want to get the look, wear rate and reduced noise that you’d get from the type that comes as standard on some frames. I don’t want to wrap it.

If the 2228 stuff is the only one that’ll do the above then that’s what I’ll have to plum for I spose.

How about putting inner tube under the self amalgamating tape? Tidier finish with the increase protection of the inner tube.

Can by a 1.6m length here for just over a fiver?

Only 1” wide but ok for a chainstay?

eBay

Thanks Andy. Looks the better cleaner option for me. Now I just need to find a seller who’ll get it to me quicker.

On reflection I’d rather have it too wide then too thin - and I could sod off the protector on the other bike if it was thicker. I’ll hit Amazon then for a full roll if no one does an equivalent.

Last time I fitted some of the 2228 tape to a bike a friend asked if the manufacturer was now doing a moulded chainstay protector for the bike.

Go with the 2" and take the time to do some CAD work first. (Cardboard aided design).

O also sound the edges needed a little trimming as the adhesive was a few mm shy if the edge. That 2" stuff is more like 45mm.

Noted, Onzadog.

Blimey, Viking tapes want a stoopid amount for delivery so another option needed cos I’m not paying that. Anyone know of any major retailers that stock it; B&Q etc?

There is nothing as good and I've not found a high street retailer carrying it as it's a specialist product.

Any way if you want a job doing properly etc. Farnells have all sizes and delivery is £3.95 1 inch here - also do 2" as well

What frame is it for?I've used Nukeproof chainstay protectors on my last two bike, just need a bit of trimming and extra glue.

VHS slapper tape looks great, but never in stock in the UK.

Nothing as good as 2228, sticks to frames, unlike the cheaper alternatives.

I've been using Specialized S-Wrap HD bar tape on my G1, stays clean, quietens chain slap as is durable.

The Generalist. Thanks but no, I’m in Milton Keynes.

Bagstard. It’s for the new Scandal 29’er and my Rose Uncle Jimbo.

Steelforreal. Thanks, that looks a better price.

Is this a gap in the market. I know a lot of brands are putting better options on frames as standard but there must be loads of people out there with frames that could benefit this product vs a neoprene option?

For a knock-off version of 2228 tape?

Possibly, but it would have to be very good.

I did think it was expensive when I bought my first roll, but once I saw how good it was and what it could do on the bike, I thought it was very good value.

Thanks steel4real, looks like the 50mm job will be about £25 from Farnells, but if I get a bike or three out of it...
