I've got a MK1 Cotic Flare with a standard 73mm threaded BB. 142mm back end. Currently running a few year old SLX double chainset bodged with BB spacer swapping to run a single 32T narrow/wide ring. Not sure what BCD the ring is right now.....

Can someone please recommend a reasonably priced single specific chainset for me? That preferably could take the existing ring?

At the back I've got 11-46 10spd cassette, with an 11spd mech and 10spd shifter, which all works great. I'd thought that when I need a new cassette I'll go 11spd and pick a cheap shifter up at that same time.

Older SLX will be 104, not aware how a much neater option but then I ran a similar setup for years with no issue. I now run a Raceface Aeffect setup which is running a direct mount chainring at the moment and it is a neater solution, but that was mainly so I could run 28/30 chainring if I wanted.

XT

The "few years old" SLX could well be 104mmBCD 4-bolt so you'll struggle to find an equivalent these days as Shimano have gone asymmetric these days, so you'll need a new ring too.

If you want to go for a direct mount ring then look at RF Aeffect crank, as this will fit your current BB.

So I'm now looking at £130 for a chainset that has one ring as opposed to two or three and a 30T ring that I don't want, great value....

Does it really have to be single ring specific? It does look nicer and allows for smaller rings but, both my bikes have single ring on ancient M970 XTR- light, cheap, I've bought expensive cranks to replace them twice and one broke and the other turned out to be exactly the same weight.

I got a Middleburn RS8 off of fleabay for £50 earlier this year, cosmetically poor but functionality fine.
Would have been ideal for the OP 🙂 Keep an eye on there for similar?
All my MTBs have Middle burns now, would recomend them. Not the blingiest but lightish and tough as old boots.

SRAM NX and get a gxp adapter for your BB. It comes with a steel 32t direct mount chainring

No. Just keep your current chainset and fit one ring on it. You only need to spend money if you want a new chainset, and they aren't free.

I've got this RF Aeffect for sale. In pretty much new condition. Won't take your existing ring but you won't need it. Email matt dot will at email dot com if you're interested.

Slx single, even the new 12sp ones are under £100, M7000 are around £80, hard to find 104bcd chainsets but loads of 104 chainrings, also you could have used 3mm chainring spacers 75p each instead of dodgy bb bodge.

Why do you want a new chainset if you want to keep your current ring and the one you have got is working ok?

I looked at single chainring specific chainsets November last year and bought a truvativ stylo for about £60 or £70 and it came with a 32t NW Stam ring for that price. Eagle compatible but also 11 speed compatible.

It wouldn’t work with a hollowtech 2 BB unless you could get a gxp adapter for the non drive side. Or you bought a gxp bb from sram / Hope / Uberbike etc.

Or you could try and get a DUB version of the same chainset and get a sram dub bb that is meant to be more durable than gxp.

But again I come back to why do you want to change what you have?

@andrewh - is the middleburn an external type bb like RF out of interest these days?

Current crank is goosed as non drive side arm worked loose while my dad was borrowing my bike, he didn't notice and by the time I did it was a wonder it was still attached at all, it's worn the splines/axle so it won't stay tight now however much I over tighten it.

Forget about using your current chainring and just get a new slx crank.

Merlin slx
