Hi,
I am looking for a jacket for MTB, but as a beginner I am not really sure where to start. I am after something windproof, breathable, water resistant, light weight and stashable (in a medium sized hydration bag). I ride a fair amount of single track so I guess it needs to be fairly well made so it doesn't snag and tear.
Any suggestions? I was looking at:
-Altura Mayhem
-Endura Urban
-Madison Addict
Would welcome some thoughts and advice etc.
Thanks in advance,

Light weight soft shell for what you want.

Can't recommend a specific jacket, but see what's on discount I guess.

My most worn jacket is my Patagonia simple guide, but I'm sure there are cheaper options.

how hot do you run?

Id be looking for vents as well they all cause me to over heat, I often just wear a light weight gore gilet cos I overheat other wise.

Im tempted with a humvee http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/endura-hummvee-convertible-jacket-aw15/rp-prod112687?gs=1&gclid=CjwKEAjwho2xBRD0mpzUvsya6SgSJAAkRepSw7wGM41Nu_QmKMRiNgsYLNdxx1zPGrv3vtgzqdPwShoC3Qfw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

as it turns into a gilet

though these seem popular:

I'd have to say Endura are best avoided. I've just had a ridiculous warranty experience with them where they've refused to warranty a jacket with is literally coming apart at the seams. So much for their reputation .

Gore gear is pretty good - but at the mid to upper end for expense. I started off with something similar to this. You can remove teh arms which might make it a bit more versatile.

Now I'm more inclined to just wear a base and a jersey with a foldaway Montane windstopper in my bag. Don't need a jacket most of the time although on cold days they are still nice.

Pretty hot.. but usually not for the first hour or so now that temperatures are getting closer to zero.

Madison Addict is VG VFM (liked it so much I got another), but not exactly lightweight - that and a decent baselayer will see me through most of what Winter's got

This. If it's not actually pi$$ing it down, a base layer, jersey, and Pertex-type gilet and/or jacket will keep you more comfortable, and be much more versatile than the jackets you've mentioned.
That said, I do have a super light eVent jacket I keep in my pack if it looks like it might be wet, and they're not cheap.
