hi there,

i have a deore xtr m952 rear mech which is listed as being 9-speed. i also have a deore xt rear shifter (i think it is a m760 as it is silver with black triggers) which is also 9-speed.

when disconnected from the rear mech, the shifter clicks 8 times which indicates that it is working and it is 9-speed.

when i connect the gear cable to the rear mech (clicking the shifter all the way down and then pulling the cable hand tight through the mech with it adjusted inline with where the small sprocket will be, the shifter will only shift in a 8-speed pattern (ie. 7 clicks) across the range to where the top sprocket will be.

why is it doing this? what have i done wrong?

i have a sram 9-speed cassette and chain, but this issue has nothing to do with them as i haven't connected it all yet... it is just the relationship between the mech and the shifter.

any words of wisdom would be very gratefully received right now as i am at a loss.

cheers

How far wound up is the cable tensioner on the shifter when you pulled the cable through?

you sure the cable is clamped correctly at the mech ? (I think there used to be a way of bodging a different pull rstio on road mechs by clamping them differently)

(or maybe a bent hanger ??)

Are the high and low stop screws correctly adjusted on the rear mech? If you push the mech by hand will it go from smallest to biggest sprocket?

I think the upper and lower screws are adjusted correctly, but I will need to check again. When I clicked through the gears it seemed to go from bottom to top sprocket in perfect alignment, but over 8 rather than 9 ratios. Basically, it is acting like a beautifully indexed 8-speed system! Aaaaargh. That aint gonna go down well with my shiny new sram cassette!

Are there any other adjusters on the mech to look at, such as the b-tensioner? Is there an indexing adjusting screw? (am not at home at the mo so can't check)

Cheers

any further ideas before i give up and hand it to a bike shop?

the barrel adjusters on the shifter and the mech are both wound in and the cable is pulled hand tight through the mech.

What others said.

Untension the cable (make sure you are in highest gear - smallest cog first). Take the chain off. Check the top and bottom stops.

If these are OK put the chain back on and get the cable tension correct. If it's refusing to change into lowest gear (biggest cog) then it *may* be the b-adjuster.
