[Closed] Heel rub - anyone tried the lizard skins carbon leather patches?

For some reason on longer rides I always end up with heel rub on my non-driveside chainstay.

As it was damp yesterday I managed to rub through the invisiframe helitape on my carbon bike - fortunately it has only just gone through.

Has anyone found any heavy duty patches that would prevent damage? I have seen the lizard skins carbon leather ones anyone used these?

A couple of wraps of some self amalgamating rubber tape would be my suggestion.

£2.99(?) from Screwfix. I use it as CS protector on all my bikes.

A lizard skin chain slap protector on the non-drive side?

Out of interest do you ride clipped in?

An old inner tube split down the middle, cut open and wrapped round works well. I use cable ties to secure the ends...

I do ride clipped in, eggbeaters that have lots of float.

Thanks for the ideas, I have some amalgamating tape so will try that as it will be easy to clear the brake hose clips

I normally wrap a slit open inner tube around the drive side chainstay to stop chain slap. That would last a fair while I'd have thought.

I had heel rub years ago when I switched bikes. Well it was more the pedals/shoes/frame/crank combo that didn't work. I switched to Mavic Alpine XL, clipped pedals that had cages and switched sides of a spacer on the cranks. This worked but now I ride flats

It's interesting that you say this happens on longer rides, and on your potentially weaker left side if you are right handed/footed.

Could it be that muscles are tiring and you shift to compensate but because you're clipped the result is you move your heel in? How about adjusting the cleat position or if you were on flats you might be able to reposition without heel rub?

Might be some muscle toning you could do with glutes? No expert on this though! I had issues due to weak glutes, common amongst cyclists with desk jobs apparently, according to the physio

Funnily enough my dad was just telling me about a little hobby he had when in Cyprus with the army in the '50s. He used to skin lizards and tan the leather. Don't think he put any carbon bits into it in those days.

Yes, I've got one of the carbon leather chainstay patched on each side of my hardtail. It's also got one of the bigger ones on the underside of the downtube a sit sounded awful when rocks were rattling off the frame 😀

The patches are still working really well and have been fitted for two years or so.

With egg beaters there is a lot of float - but its probably worth me putting new cleats on as that does reduce it a little.

It definitely is my weaker leg- on my last frame i also managed to scuff the seat stay on a particularly gritty ride. Perhaps I can try some individual leg training on the turbo trainer
