[Closed] Hans Dampf and DT 5.1 rim with tubeless kit - extremely tight bead!, help!

I'm going mad here trying to fit a 2.35 Hans Dampf tubeless ready tyre to my rear DT swiss 5.1 wheel complete with new DT swiss tubeless kit, the last 5" or so of the tyre just does not want to mount.

The front one mounted fine, I have also experienced difficulty fitting a LUST Ignitor on this wheel.

The rim is true and as far as I know in good condition.

I have some alu Lezyne tyre levers, plastic ones would have been snapping like tooth picks at the first sight of this plight.

I've read around for tips on proper fitting technique, the tire is sat right in the middle channel of the rim, as I understand this puts the least tension on the bead. I had a brief go at soaping up the rim last night and am just about to try this again.

Does anyone have any suggestions on helping to fit this tyre?

Honestly?

Ditch the DT5.1 rims... Or ditch any hope of setting the combo you have up tubeless I'm afraid!

DT5.1 rims are notoriously tight to fit tyres onto (as well as being made from Swiss Cheese). I used to have a pair, with the same rimstrip setup you have, and well... I couldn't get a number of tyres on, broke several tyre levers in the process, and I can normally get UST tyres onto a UST rim with just my fingers, I have good technique and know what I'm doing it's just the DT rims with the Eclipse kit is a nightmare!

I eventually after much swearing, and skinned knuckles and a couple of broken tyre levers, managed to get some normal dual ply High Rollers on. No problems getting them to pump up I'll add, but getting them on the rims took a flipping age, and anything with a tighter bead would not go on full stop.

๐Ÿ™ Oh noes. But the front one went on fine, this is so frustrating.

I've just had a go at using some boiling soapy water and I've got about an inch or so further on, but there's just absolutely no stretch in the bead.

Can I not do something weird like soak the tire in some boiling water so it stretches a bit or is this a lost hope?

Tried neat fairy liquid on the bead?

Also, different tyres, but some useful technique here with the straps etc to help:

I've had similar trouble with Fat Alberts which went fine on some other rims. In the end it was just blood sweat and tears. Two pairs of hands helps too.

I've got hans dampf 2.35 Tubeless ready tyres on my DT 5.1 rims, it was a bit tight, but not too bad, I've fitted tighter tyres in the past .

I'm not running tubeless rims though, but wouldnt have thought that would make much difference.

Thinking of switching to tubeless (again) in the near future though, as I'm getting fed up of pinch flats.

**** me just done it.

Watched the video IA posted above (what a gent in the vid too) and secured the bead in the rim channel with zip ties as I went around, then put Fairly liquid neat (thanks again IA) on the inside of the bead with my hand.

Cue gritted teeth and much anchorage with tire levers and it banged on.

My wrists are pretty sore now and GOD FORBID I ever get a chuffing fatal sidewall rip on the trail.

julians I think you need every advantage you can get getting tires on these rims. The dt swiss rim strip is a couple of mm thick I guess but I think this makes all the difference in the end. It also doesn't help that the valve stem has a large rectangular rubber block on the inner side of the rim, this prevents that 1" section of tire from seating properly in the rim channel. For other future forum searchers - I'd recommend getting a stans one or just cut it out from a tube.

When I removed my LUST ignitor before beginning this ordeal it was a lot easier to remove than last time, so I'm hoping that the bead will stretch a little bit whilst it's on.

When I mounted my high rollers on my crest rims I had to soften the tyre with hot water and I lubed the wheel rim with soapy water then wore a pair of rubbery garden gloves to give me a good grip and with a bit of brut force they went on.

Glad you sorted it, and on the plus side, you can probably get away with nice low pressures without it rolling/burping ๐Ÿ™‚

Makes a MASSIVE difference using the rimstrips... Without them, all of my tyres would go on fine with an inner tube in. With them, almost nothing would go on, which defeated the point as I wanted to run tubeless... Ditched the DT rims in the end for some Mavic EN521's...

Good for you getting the bstard on - but as mboy says thats a bollox rim for tubeless, just way too much aggravation.
The bead does stretch a bit like you say though, so you should be able to get a punctured tyre off on the trail with a good set of levers and some patience.
