MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Thinking I may get one as my outer ring has taken a bashing on a Scotland trip. Guessing somebody on here must use one. Whats it like to ride? I hear it drags a bit in the larger gear (but as I'll be using that on the downs I'm not to worried). How does it cope with mud etc?. Some good prices from the states on Ebay, so may give it a go.
it's amazing. no discernible drag and v. well-sealed. have had one since April and haven't had any problems... the instant shifting is unreal and you'll wonder how you ever put up with all the limitations of a front mech. invest and progress 😉
Furry_marmot, did you get your frame faced?
BB yes, ISCG tabs no. my frame (Sinister Gruitr) has a removable ISCG adapter plate that fits over the BB. everything seemed to line up properly and neither myself nor my shop had an ISCG facing tool... it works fine!
Ye was wondering about finding somebody with an ISCG facing tool, I've a Titus and it looks straight.
Also can you get away with a short cage rear mech if you fit one (using a 34-11 rear cassette)?
of course! no point using anything but a short-cage mech with it, since the chain growth only has to span the rear cassette, nothing changes at the front. I run 8spd (11-32) with a short-cage XT. works perfectly.
Stupid question, but how do you shift a Hammerschmidt? Separate lever or is it more like a Schlumpf?
trigger shifter, just like a front mech except with only two settings. SRAM sell a special one just for the Hammerschmidt, I think it's available in two versions equivalent to X-9 or X-0 spec (I have the cheaper one), though I'm not quite sure. I've heard from a couple of other riders that you can get away with using a standard SRAM trigger, though.
