Sorry silly question probably, first time GXP user, got a set of Goldix from Ali Express for my sons bike as finding reasonably priced 155cm cranks for kids not easy.
Currently on single chainring but would like a double on for summer, can I just sling a double GXP spider onto the same fitting as the single chainring and that's it?

I believe the answer here is yes.
I've done the opposite (took off a double spider) for a single ring and it's fine.
SRAM chainrings are offset specific to take into account there use, I think this applies to their spider too e.g. their double ring spider gives the correct chainline for a 135/142 spaced rear.
I would just double check you have clearance for the inner ring.
