Hi
I am looking to replace my chainrings on the GT but wondered if it were possible to go for something bigger that the standard 44 tooth big ring and still use the stock XT front mech?
Any advice gratefully received as I have made this mistake years ago trying to fit a road bike crankset onto an MTB!

Cheers Tupper

I used to have a 52 on an orange clockwork with an xt mech in around 93. Depends on the mech not the ring surely?

Had a 96 zaskar too in black, standard 42 xt on that though I think

used to have a zaskar look at the bottle cage screws they may get in the way of raising the mech

48 tops (non compact mtb chainset required - like you find on several trecking style tourers) front mech capacity and chainstay clearance are issues as you may have discoved with your previous attempt witht the road chainset.
