Has anyone tried to do a GRX 1x10 setup? I know you can do GRX 1x11 and 2x11 and 2x10. But what about 1x10?

I fancy 1x and some hydro discs, but I don't really want the expense of an entire new 11spd drivetrain (currently running 2x10 Tiagra which I'm happy with for the most part).

I would think I can use a Shimano Deore 10spd 11-42? Link
The trouble is that the GRX 10spd mechs officially have a max 30t range. Can I use Deore or 10spd SLX or similar? Or are the cable pulls all wrong?

If I stick with Tiagra I guess (?) I'm limited to ~ 11-32t cassettes which is a bit too limiting with only 1x (I think I want a 44t front chainring at least).

Having done the maths I don't think it necessarily makes financial sense - 1x10 is coming out at £413 vs £555 for the considerably more luxurious 1x11. I'm still curious though! If I stick with (Tiagra) 2x10 I can upgrade the brifters and calipers for £300 which is the cheap option.

P.S. Shimano have made the GRX launch way too complicated. Navigating the various options is mind-boggling.

Won’t the RD-RX400 take a 41T set up as 1X?

You could use a goat link with your existing mech but it’s wasn’t great for me with no clutch mechanism.

Apparently it takes a max 36t sprocket (although can take a 41t range). Perhaps it would take a 42t unofficially but it seems like a big gap.

Good idea about the goat link though, hadn't thought of that.

a deore m6000 in medium will do a 42t cassette. i'm using one on my sonder al camino 1x10 with deore 42t cassette and it works fine.
