[Closed] Going back to 3 speed on the front. Chain-set recommendations?

As the title says, after nearly a full year of using 2x10 including a 24 solo and a stage race, I'm pretty convinced I don't like it. Any suggestions for a nice 3 speed chain-set?

Thanks.

budget?

I'm a bit out of the loop on whats about for the price these days but I'm guessing 260-300ish would be my budget.

Just wondering, what don't you like about a double? I don't think I've ever heard of anyone going back to a triple.

And to give you an idea on pricing..

And preferably I'd like 22/32/42.

I just find it hard to find gears that I'm really happy with when racing it. And i miss the granny for long climbs in endurance races, mainly 24's and stage races, where with the 2x10 I'm forced into a lower cadence than I'm comfortable with. Also the big ring seems a bit too small for some downhills. If I was just racing XC and spending most of the time in the big ring then I'd probably be a huge fan of it, but for endurance racing it just seems like too much of a compromise in gear choices.

I'm sort of with you, but I remember how good it was in drier i.e faster months.

Don't shoot me down, but wasn't 2x10 born out of XC racing? It certainly feels like it needs to be riden harder.
Until the marketing men came along I didn't feel like I was wanting for anything other than what I had.
But I'm a sucker for a bit of marketing, I even bought wheels with hardly any spokes once.

Nah 2x n was adopted by xc after various other MTBers had been using two rings for ages....

OP Have you tried changing the rings on your double setup to suit you better?or are you just using what it came with?

Just using what it came with. Whats the biggest jump you can have with 2 speed?? Didn't think it would be possible to change the rings much as the chain would have a massive jump up or down.

Why anything other than XT?

Replacing XTR rings is throwing money away imo

I believe you can have up to 14T difference between the two rings. What is your current setup?

I get away with 22,36 in my home brew setup

You must be very handy pedalling downhill singletrack at the speeds you can in 36/11!

I would have said stick with 2x10 until I built a 29er and "temporarily" put an old XTR triple on there.
That big gear can be great on long open descents on an XC lite build - and the 22 is vital for me for winching up - at times.
Did anyone mention chainlne? Its not so good in the middle ring - big cog on 2x?
Still got 2x10 on the 26/160 bike (normally 1x10 but it's SO muddy here right now in the. South Downs).
In Summer 1x form getting that 36x36 up some hills can be hard if traction is poor. And the chainline IS awful in 36-36.
As for 1x11, that must make for some pretty extreme angles.
Maybe the triple will come back ๐Ÿ˜‰
SLX triple will do the job.

Middleburn. If you change your mind you can go to single, double and back to triple.
