Ladies and Gents of the STW borg

Is a Giant Anthem 29er a good thing for soloing 24hr events or is there anything better for the money - £3 grand? Newcastleton in the first instance.

Likes - spec, big wheels, full bounce, warranty

Dislike-rims, possibly saddle

Thoughts gratefully received

Paul

Cheers Thom - they seem to be liked and the only bad thing I've heard is that the bearings need to be replaced from time to time. Rather like most bikes then.

I would seriously consider buying one if the frame only sales were an option. I have cash and ready to buy but I can't seem to find a large one anywhere to buy 🙁

Hence why I'm considering buying a Salsa Spearfish, great value and the reviews seem good as well.

Maybe worth considering?

Not sure how useful this is as I haven't ridden the 29er version but I really, really didn't like my anthem x, so would say if you haven't ridden an anthem test ride one. Sure you will like it most do, but I learnt the hard way that not everyone like the same bike! Suited me on paper but not at all in reality.

Thanks fellas - it would appear that the search goes on to Salsa and a trip to Liverpool to test the same would be in order afore parting with the cash.

There was a Large Anthem 29er in Dave Mellor Cycles (Shrewsbury) - he might split it or be able to get a frame from Giant - he has been a Giant dealer for years and runs an ace shop.

Thanks for the heads-up rootes, I'll give him a bell in the morning. But how likely is it that a shop would split a full bike just to sell a frame? I would have thought unlikely?

I have now found a size large Spearfish, the last one till June, got to make my mind up fast, decisions decisions 😕

Spoke to Dave, very helpful guy, called Giant UK and the frame only shipments are coming over till the autumn. Plus he didn't want to strip a full build, so it looks like this option is no go for me.

Rode one on Sunday on an extended demo. Bit of a game changer for me. Felt quick, rolled smoothly but the real surprise was when I started gunning it on tight woodsy singletrack. It held a line as well as my Turner, Ibis and Cove bikes and seemed to eat up rocky sections with apparent ease. I haven't ridden a bike that felt as good as it in years....... 😯

It's what I'd buy for racing if I had the cash but yeah shame the frame only option isn't available yet.

Hi Bream

Where did you source the frame in the end?

Cheers

A Giant shop in the states, with all Giant stuff it's shop pick up only but as my dad lives in the same town he will sign for it and then the shop can ship it to me direct. So only works if you have someone who can sign for it before shipping.

Out of interest, what does it work out cost wise?

Warranty will be registered with my dad, so any issue and it'll cost me the postage back to sort. Yes, already checked its not a recall frame.

Cost was $1445 and I'm having a pair of Fox F29 forks, both for $2099, + $90 shipping to me in Sweden, + obviously I'll have import tax once it arrives etc.

Looking forward to the new build now 😀
