So my lovely scandal 29er has cracked, but I've a friend who'll try to reweld it.

It got me thinking - I really wouldn't change anything about the size/geometry of that frame, so if I could get the geo specs from on-one/online, how easy would it be to post those to someone in teh far east and say "make that in carbon/steel/bamboo please"...

What's teh go to company?

I've looked into custom steel framing in the UK - at £1200 it's out of budget, but if there were a far east company....

Thoughts...

Could you work a few extra hours for the cash?

Pact Bikes?

After all, they might know the geometry already.

🙂

(Still £1200 mind but you get to spend 5 days using proper tools)

Importing cheap Chinese steel?

Even good old T45 is no longer available 'made in Britain' - comes from France now.

You can get a steel UK made custom frame for less than that, a few to look at: Toad, farrer cycles, Ted James designs, DMO and Sword cycles... I am waiting on a frame my frame from Sword cycles, should be here in the next week or so. From what I have seen looks great. I went for a slightly more "progressive" version of my current frame but think just copying what you like already is a good idea... Just hope my idea is equally good...

Not a help budget wise but I took my Whyte 29C to Gary at Curtis Bikes and got him to copy it's geo (long TT, short ST, 69.5HA etc). Worked out very well indeed.

I guess you don't have a practice pharmacy.......

Look up spanner bikes.

With a bit of work at your end you could get a Titanium version for 500-750 BUT... its unlikely to feel like your current frame due to tube size and material.

Worth having a look on LFGSS, there's a lot of custom steel going on. As well as all the London/UK based framebuilders, there are a few Polish guys who seem quite popular, and might be worth a try: Rychtarski and Orlowski. Also have vague memories of a few blog posts by people who bought custom Ti from China or Russia, but can't remember the names.

Get Wittson titanium to build you one. Having seen the "quality" of some of the names mentioned that's the way I'd go.

DrP - Get yourself along to

its 15th-17th April in Bristol, have a gander at the porn and then figure out your funds: a locum shift, sell stuff on ebay, whore yourself out, you know you want to. I happen to have www.tedjamesdesign.com / https://www.instagram.com/tedjamesdesign down the road from me in Stroud, Glos. , the guys a walking bicycle engineering fanatic and recommended. I'd personally recommend him, but there are plenty of others out there. If you make the trek to his workshop, drop me an email and i'll show you some local trails. Oh - and consider your 3 favorite numbers......

Qwerty..the outlaws live in Gloucester...I might ping you a message next time I'm up and take the bike....

However, ALAS, a bling 'spensive new frame is kind of low down on the family priority of finances (after new kitchen, trips away etc..)..happy with that, that's just how life is!
However, a reasonably priced frame could be on the cards!!!

Chickens is local.
Enigma do steel
Mason is also local
Mate had a former Enigma torch guy do a steel road beauty locally as well. Can't remember the name on the down tube though.
Saffron can't be far away either as JoB had a steel mtb done (with carbon bits)
Price is your enemy

XACD is the Far East Ti builder that a lot of people seem to have used. Worth a Google, very cheap, but some rather mixed reviews of the service.

London bike builders that spring to mind include Saffron, Donhou, Hartley and Talbot, but I doubt that any of them are cheap.

Downlands Cycles/Invicta Frameworks are near Canterbury and do bike building courses for about £1000. Not sure how much it would cost to just get a frame made, but I'd imagine they would be at the better value end in the UK.
