...I know this is highly relative WRT: bike, weight, luggage, topology, atmospherics etc....

but can people list the following

1. Number of times per week,
2. Distance (round trip)
3. Location,
4. Approximate MPH,

In my case:

1. 3
2. 27
3. Bath/Bristol
4. 16-19

Cheers,

M.

Anyone else play the silly commuter race? I just can't help myself.

Anyone else play the silly commuter race? I just can't help myself.

I've solved that - I got a Charge Steamer cruiser bike from Evans - 3 speed sturmey archer, drum brakes and sit up and beg styling - suddenly I don't feel any need to reach HRMax on every school run.

You know, I think the average commuting speeds generally posted on these threads tell me that either I've always been even slower than I thought I was or....

...people post their moving averages, rather than average speed across the whole time they're out.

I often wonder the same thing, OMITN.

Eg, some of the 'average' speeds some people claiming they achieve in London sound pretty high. Not saying they don't ride that fast, but it's very difficult to achieve a high average speed in town due to traffic, lights etc. I spose if you come in on some of the A roads you might get a good speed up, on a road bike, but around 10-12mph is what I manage around town, on a hybrid, and I'm probbly at the quicker end of the spectrum of cyclists in town.

Fair enough.

My (now old - hence the car) commute was 17 miles each way. In the summer my "real" average was 20mph, though the moving average was quicker due to the urban element which made up half of the journey. Hence the question.

New commute will be 25 miles each way, but I'm so unfit (had 4 months off the bike), that I think miles per hour might be the wrong unit of measurement..!

In my case, mine is calculated not cycle computed:

I do 15.126 miles on the way in to work, and 12 on the way home:

On the way in, my best time is 48 mins, my worst is 56 mins (iphone timer on my arm)

15/(48/60) = 15/0.8 = 18.75mph = best
15/(56/60) = 15/.93 = 16.12mph = worst

Simples. 😀

What you after the stats for Daffy? Depths of winter after a long hard day I sometimes crawl home the shortest route averaging 12mph; height of summer, take the afternoon off, head over the bridge into Wales and do 70+ miles 🙂

15mph inclusive.

A couple of weeks time it will go to 15 miles, cheltenham to evesham.

And I know it is going to hurt, I have lost a lot of fitness since I got made redundant. That was a13 mile commute between cheltenham and tewkesbury. Average for that was 16-18mph.

Andy, no mate. I'm up near Dyrham. So I'm across the top into Filton.

I was just curious, as I wouldn't class myself as particularly fit (especially to the point of adding 70+ miles to my journey) but wanted to see where I was in the pack....middle to bottom it would appear 😕

Ahhh, I remember now, you were asking about places to move to a while back?

Several of my routes take me that way, Ring Road path? Or some of the nice lanes Pucklechurch way, or the other way up Hinton Hill, on to Castle Combe etc.

If you really fancy developing some speed we do a group Chain Gang ride from Cadence Bike Shop in Bath on a Saturday morning, 3 groups do the same 43 mile loop, starting a 5 min intervals aiming to finish about the same time for coffee and chat - to give you an idea the slowest averages 18-20, the fastest 22+.

It's funny that, once I got used to my commute my appetite levelled out. I don't find I have to eat more than anyone else. Everyone's different though.

3. Hemel Hempstead/Watford
4. 10mph during the summer (canal and park), slightly quicker on the road during the winter (good weather, take the road bike, carpy weather and when the potholes form, take the mountain bike).

Thinking of getting a trailer so I can leave the car behind on shopping day. Not leaving the car behind on diving day.

1. Once every eight days compulsory, twice is an achievement, as it has to be two consecutive days.
2. 32 miles, most off-road
3. North Notts
4. 18mph on the way to work, 16 on the way back (do I subconsciously like work more than home ?) - this is moving average, have to stop to cross the A1 which can be time-consuming...

Kudos to those commuting most days - any helpful hints to stop me always pedaling flat-out everywhere I go ? Maybe I could commute more if I could walk the next day ?

I find it easier to drive in on Monday with all my kit, food, money, lock etc for Tue/Wed/Thur and then drive in on Friday to collect it.

I carry nothing but: a phone, a credit card, a pump, a tube, some headphones and my ID.

It's much easier to repeat commute without all that crap on your back

Padded shorts (+ lycra bottoms) are often a must when you're starting out.

I used to ride 200 miles a week (20 miles each way across London). Rubbish train connections and not owning a car made it mandatory.

Hurt like hell for the first few weeks but then got easier.

In short, just do it and ignore the pain, oh and sell you car 😉

Used to commute 170 miles a week, and then add on another 80 or so over the weeked.

That got me ftrong, but doing the same all winter then got me ill.

Headwind tonight wasn't half as bad as I expected. Well it was bad but it was dry, reasonably warm and I had a rider in the distance to chase resulting in being only 4 minutes something down on average.

1 - Every day if I'm working in the office
2 - 12 miles by the shortest route but that's only for winter.
3 - Brighton
4 - Depends entirely on the weather, one way can take 30 mins in the summer or an hour in the winter when the mud gets really sticky and the chalk really slippery.
