MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Do gear cables come in different standard diameters? My rear mech was sticking a bit so I changed the cable after flushing out the outer and using a yellow clarkes cable form the parts bin. It went from bad to worse and I thought maybe the outer was kinked. I then bought a new set of XTR cables from CRC - £17 and half price. The next day it then occured to me that it might the cable; I changed it for a silver one and it works smoothly.

I believe all gear cable for all types of mountain bike and road bike is 1.3mm diameter.
Perhaps the one from your parts bin was sticky as it had dust on it that had stuck to the anti-corrosion or any lubricant that was applied in the factory? Or maybe it was just bone dry?

A standard steel gear cable inner is 1.3mm as @robdeanhove said.
XTR and Dura-Ace are currently 1.2mm, though they have made 1.1mm in the past.
I always thought the standard was 1.2mm although Gripshift (around the time of the X-Ray) used 1.1mm cables. Never heard of a 1.3 but happy to be proved wrong.
Shimano def made 1.2 then they did 1.1 for Gripshift, which helps alot on any system as you have found out.
Great on brakes too.
All Shimano gear cables are 1.2mm.
I bought the cables in Australia but I would not have thought that would make a differnce and they were clean when I put them on . They are going through Goodridge outers but I assume that they \re a standard diameter too. Anyway, it is now working and I have a new set of XTR cables just in case. Cheers for the help.
