I've often wondered why Garmin's Edge computers don't have a gear tracking function, well it seems that this might about to change.
Apparently gear tracking is going to be added to certain devices and it could be really useful . It should give notifications when usage criteria are meet (it could probably also be used for maintenance alerts).
I can't seem to find any info on what unis will be uploaded.
Anyway, article here:-
-- Edit --
It seems to be already available in the Connect App
Been on the Connect app for a few years...only real negative is that you sometimes need to amend the gears used in the app for the activity.
What's recently changed is that you can track components/collections of components rather than just what bike or shoes you were using.
ProBikeGarage has been doing this (and probably better than whatever half arsed solution garmin produce) for years but that draws its data from Strava rather than Garmin.

As a relatively late joiner to the Garmin party, I am staggered by how poor their software / UI is. How on earth have they managed to maintain such market dominance with a user experience that feels 15 years old?
I think it depends on how much you use it, does it not?
Website isn't that bad, but also doesn't have me rushing to log in regularly. The Connect app seems to work very well.
No idea what it is like for plotting routes as I don't use it for that, I'm pretty anti-social so not overly bothered about leaderboards, so they could be absolutely garbage and I wouldn't know.
It captures a lot of metrics and shows them in a decent way...I can't fault it for that. However, that suggests I'm not a heavy user or making best use out of what I've got perhaps.
The 'news' is that it's just been added as a last step of saving an activity on your device. I've a 1040 and this popped up as part of/after the recent bootloop fix was applied - unannounced. It's an additional step that can be turned on/off by activity type.
As above - the "new" bit is that you can also now track at a component level. As an example, this means you can now track chain/tyre wear rather than just total mileage for your bike.
Presumably you could also use it for maintenance prompts. I'm notoriously poor at remembering to check my brake pads for wear or top up sealant.
It's slightly frustrating that you don't seem able to add gear (components) to an existing bike when editing its details.
