Firstly thanks to all the suggestions which I tried and didn’t work.
As I am going on a mtb trip (Norway & Sweden) next weekend I bit the built and bought a new one.
I wasn’t looking forward to going through the rigmarole of setting it up but was pleasantly surprised when it did it all using the settings on my “broken” one
However, when I tried it it doesn’t record ascent or descent. Therefore I am guessing I accidentally altered a setting on my old one hence it not working and the new one has that same altered setting. Any suggestions what I might have altered?
You could try recalibrating the altimeter, I don't know if that might help.
The only setting I can find on my Edge Explore 2 that might be relevant is Auto Calibrate in the Altimeter settings (mine's set to on & when I set off the unit auto calibrates itself to the altitude of the start point. Perhaps it won't track altitude if it's off and not calibrated).
As a final resort I guess you could reset the unit and reconfigure everything.
I suggest you power on the device and then leave it outside with a clear view of the sky (NO obstructions!) for at least 10 minutes. That should give you a very good GPS accuracy (if it's not, you've got bigger problems).
Then, start a ride without actually moving - within a few seconds, you should see a message saying "elevation calibrated at location" (or something similar), making sure you have an activity profile which displays the current elevation field.
Is the elevation correct for your location?
I sometimes find if I start a ride, and start moving, too quickly after powering on the device, the altitude is screwed up. By leaving the unit on for a few minutes, it gets a good solid GPS position and can normally determine the starting altitude.
You shouldn't need to wait such a long period of time for subsequent rides in the same vicinity, but if you're heading to Norway and Sweden, I'd definitely give the unit at least 10 minutes to find and stabilize the GPS position when you first get there...
I have the edge explore 2 which has three preset ride profiles: Road, gravel, and indoor. The latter does not record altitude. Have you chosen a profile like that?
Didn't see Part 1, so apologies if someone has already mentioned - have you inadvertently turned off an important base map? It should use the barometer but maybe it cross-references against the DEM and gets upset if it's not there?
Try resetting to factory settings (not yours) and see if it starts working again. Note which settings / maps etc. it has enabled.
