Garmin - how to make it auto upload to strava after a ride

[#13536274]

I've got a garmin 840 and getting the rides to upload to strava is a right pain which usually involves syncing and restarting the garmin connect app at least twice.

Previously I had a 520. I'd finish a ride at the back gate and by the time I unlocked the back door I'd get a notification it was uploaded, with no further action needed from me.

Anyone had similar? As far as I can tell, everything is set to upload, sync, automatically, but is there a hidden menu or setting I've missed?

Can you do a reset to make it forget everything and then start from scratch setting up the 840?

I'm wondering if you've still got the old 520 set as default so it's looking for that rather than the new one?

Mine (also 840) is very temperamental, sometimes a ride just appears, other times I need to hit sync from the app, and on a few occasions I've needed to plug the USB to a laptop, copy the .fit file and then upload to connect.

Connecting to my home WiFi seemed to help but it's still hit and miss

If you have an Android phone go to Settings > Apps > Garmin Connect > Storage and clear the data and cache.

You'll then need to set it up again and can add Strava to the Connected Apps in settings and tell it what you want to sync.

With my FR255 it can sometimes take a while before the activity appears in Strava, but it does eventually.

Or ditch Strava as Garmin has everything but the social aspect (and doesn't cost)...also then means Strava doesn't have your data and prevent other 3rd parties using it for useful stuff (yes, still bitter about that as it wiped out a huge amount of usage data from Trailforks that was useful for funding applications and proving popularity)...

Alternatively, kill the Connect App connection with Strava and then add it back in via Garmin Connect.

Some other things to think about:

Have you "retired" the 520 in Garmin Connect? If you've sold it or no longer use it at all, I'd suggest doing that.

Is your Bluetooth connection between Garmin and your phone solid? Are you in a mobile or Wi-Fi black spot when you upload?

Is the ride immediately (well, within a few seconds), visible in Garmin Connect on your phone when you end the ride? I can normally seem my rides, recorded on an 840, within about 30 seconds all through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi magic, though I sometimes have to force Strava to refresh (or swipe down on the Strava app homescreen)

Is your Garmin account definitely still connected to your Strava account? (Mrs Vlad somehow had two Strava accounts under different email addresses a while back, which confused things!)

I've got a 530 (which I think is the non touch screen version of yours).  Had 130's before that.  The phone sync was super slow and sometimes the Garmin would connect to my phone, sometimes it wouldn't.  I set up the Garmin with my wifi and that sync direct (ie not via phone) was far more reliable - it would link to my wifi and sync in the time it took me to get into the house.
