I rode about 26km in about an hour with my 1-year old Edge 800 yesterday and it took about 8% of the battery. Some of that was with the map on screen but the majority was just the usual speed etc data. Is this normal as I'm a bit surprised that it dropped so much.

given the 800 manual says battery life is about 15hrs of typical usage, sounds about right?

Thats 12.5 hours. Not bad at all.
Their quoted value will depend on sensors you are using, brightness etc.
