Hi,

Quick question for Garmin users..

If I buy a Garmin Edge 705 and use the free open street mapping, is it in the same detail as on their Website ( http://www.openstreetmap.org/) Asking as if so it has all the detail I need and don't need to go for the OS mapping 800 (Too much money!)

The bundle I am looking at is 705+HR+Topo mapping 50000:1 ... Am i right in thinking the Topo maps are pretty useless for mountain biking?

Thanks in advance

They are OK but certainly not great - they have some bridleways, rivers, woods etc and also full gridlines but not brill - The openstreetmap is pretty good alternative to the expensive Topos - the last set I has haven't been updated for many years - check the revision dates!

OSM - Not quite as much detail and a bit patchy - try talky toaster Open maps

Sorry I was not very clear. If the paths show on the map on the site above and i download the map will it show on the Garmin?

It is for the Aberystwyth area if it helps, the Open street map has most of the paths/bridleways including Nant-yr-Arian trail centre.

Yes*

*provided the version of the maps you download is sufficiently up to date. You can always view it in MapSource before buying the Garmin.

The answer is that it might show but it depends whose maps you use. The data will be there but whoever compiled the map that you are using may have chosen not to show it (but usually most tracks are there). I like the openmtbmap stuff but it's pretty easy to compile yourself if you think something is missing

You can find a list of different map sources here

How would I go about compiling it myself? Sorry for basic question but this is my first venture into GPS mapping

have a google for "mobile atlas creator"

I tried it a couple of years ago before getting the garmin os maps
it allows you to capture os map tiles from various online map sites and load them onto your gps
I had the whole Swaledale area in os 25:1 and it worked great
a bit labour intensive initially though

Cheers for the help guys, I think I will be fine with the 705 and using the openmtbmaps site.

If the openmtbmaps stuff doesn't do it then shout and I'll try and explain how to compile your own maps but although not too bad to do it is better to avoid it. The only hassle I have with those maps is that there can be a little too much information on it in some areas which might slow the 705 down. See how it goes though
