I have a Polar wireless computer and front wheel speed sensor. I have lost the magnet that attaches to the spokes. I was wondering if any physics students out there could tell me if I need to replace it with a Polar specific magnet or will any old magnet model do the job. Magnetism is magnetism after all....
I suspect any magnet with enough ooomph [physics term] will suffice
Any old magnet will work
Thread Hijack, sorry.
Noticed last night when cleaning the road bike my wheel magnet was just on any old spoke. That can't be right but I can't see any reference to correct position in The Rules.
I'm thinking opposite(damn those even numbers of spokes!) the valve would seem "right", but what is "pro"? ๐

In terms of wheel balance, the best place for the magnet is opposite the 'heaviest' part of the wheel. This is probably the valve as you say, but on some wheels the pinned rim joint opposite the valve is heavier, so just spin your wheel, see where it settles, and put the magnet opposite that.

Really you need to affix the magnet to the inside of the tyre, adjacent to the valve, the sensor can then be better hidden behind the bottom bracket
Thanks for your useful comments. As usual I had no idea that such a seemingly simple topic could be such a chamber of 32 doors. It warms my heart that there are still so many public servants (surely?) productively employed in scouring the forums of the world with the sole purpose of helping those in need. You are valued.
Got my last one from wiggle for 99p
