Are there any MTB triple front mechs that are downpull ONLY (under bb cable routing) - I am building up my vagabond with flat bars & with a standard shimano MTB mech there is virtually no clearance between tyre and mech pull gubbins on a dual pull mech.
Would a retro mech work on 9 speed or just cause me more pain?

As a last resort I could go flat bar road triple mech but then I'd have to go road triple chainset too and I was hoping to keep the versatility 😥

which mech do you currently have - Shimano seem to do a variety of dual pull 9 speed front mechs - some may have less sticky outy gubbins on them?

New type sideswing mech?
My understanding is they can be pulled from above or below but have much greater clearance for tyres and better allowance for suspension chainstays etc.

New sideswing was my thoughts but didn't know what they were called - any model numbers?

would switching from top to bottom swing (or vice versa) move the clamp enough?

Do you mean High mount to Low mount? There's also a direct mount option.

The clamp isn't the problem, it's the pull mechanism - currently investigating SLX side swing - thanks andytherocketeer

Dunno what the model numbers are, but when I had a quick look the other night, sideswing mechs seemed to be rather cheaper than the normal ones (on german site in €).
For Shimano XT there's a 2x and a 3x11 version. I would guess that that would work with older set ups? (XT770 on the bike I was thinking of upgrading to not 1x)

You can get them in Sram X0, I think. There's a table on their web site somewhere that
shows the options. Cheap 2nd hand on ebay.

Well you definitely used to be able to buy "bottom pull only rear mechs, in either conventional or top swing, I'm sure I have one somewhere that's top pull only.

X9 and X0: Page 33-46 here (pdf)

(In case the Shimano option doesn't work out.)
