Afternoon fine people of STW,

Picked up a dirt cheap spares or repairs through eBay (haven't got them yet) but they were sold with some stanchion wear and topping out. Any likely culprits for topping out?

Are they easy to strip down as my old old set of fox's were a bugger to service. Repaired stanchions before so not worried there. Is there a small spring that commonly breaks to cause topping out?

Thanks

Chris

I can't say for the Talas ones, but I've got similar generation non-Talas and they are really easy to strip and service. Installed spacers into my son's 650b version and it was a really straightforward job needing no special tools (apart from the magic float fluid for the upper chamber).

Intrigued on how you went about your stanchion repair though...

Thanks Daern, tidied up a pair of worn rebas and revs before. Strip the stanchions and sand with very fine wet and dry. If the score marks are deep they can be filled with araldite or nail polish. Multiple layers sanded smooth each time until the stanchions are smooth. Function perfectly just not aesthetically to everyone's taste. I'm a functionalist so good enough for me!

First thing I'd do would be to give them a full lowers service and change the oil in the damper (im not too sure how to do that on more recent Floats, on my 2008s its a POP).

Yeah, it's easy on the newer ones - just pop the lowers off (one nut, one allen key and a bit of a clobber with a hammer), clean 'em up, new fluid in and back together they go. Great instructions on the Fox website including videos.

Top tip: use the four-character code from the back of the fork on their website to get specific details for your fork, including the correct manuals and maintenance instructions.

Sometimes you can pick up cheap, old model upper sections (crown, steerer and stanchion) from Mojo, so that's also worth a nose.
