Planning on a big day out when it is dry. Anyone ridden the FP over fountain fell? Worth doing or should I avoid?
Thinking N to S as would be a good linking trail. Path looks ok in parts but a bit grassy elsewhere.
If you mean the pennine way I'd avoid it just on that basis alone. The dales are not exactly short of good bridleways.
But no idea of conditions.
I've done it S-N (from the Malham Tarn side). The south side is well surfaced, only steep in a couple of spots, mostly rideable. The other side is briefly steep at the top, and has some grassy sections (ie a lot more pushing).
The other thing to note is that there is an active farm at the bottom on the S side, and if anyone is out and about doing lambing stuff they'll see you coming from a long way off, whereas it's a bit easier to slip by in the other direction (plus it empties you out onto a road.)
Hmmm. Heading form Horton, may dona bit of the ribble way and then skirt to the south on the road to malham tarn instead.
If you want something a bit different, you could head north from Horton, pick up the Pennine BW and go across to Sulber Gate. Immediately after the five bar gate, there's a little gate on the left which drops you down to a faint singletrack path crossing the limestone pavement (black dotted line on the OS which appears to stop on the map, but doesn't in real life). Follow this as far as a wall with a ladder stile, then turn back and head on the FP towards Crummackdale via Moughton Whetstone Spring. You can follow this all the way down to Wharfe (some more singletrack) and head back to Helwith Bridge on the road.
The Ribble Way up from there is a bit of a slog but all rideable, and the road to Malham Tarn is hillier than it looks. When I'm going in that direction, I generally take the minor road just before Helwith down to Stainforth (other side of the river), then climb up from there and go via Langscar Gate.

Quite a few options. I know most of the trails and want to add a few new bits in.
Yeah, I've done that more than a few times. Would be easy to add in the bit I recommended just by missing Horton out entirely and coming down the PBW, which isn't the end of the world considering it doesn't have a proper cafe or shop any more.
Ah right re: silver gate. Was there the other week. Heading over to Clapham and SW the trail down into the pavement. Like the sound of that. Thanks.
