https://www.plotaroute.com/routeplanner

Seems easy to use. I know there are others but just thought I would share.

Does it 'snap to' roads, BWs etc?

You can select 'bike' or 'walk' or nothing and it will snap to paths, bridleways or nothing accordingly.

Just plotted a quick route in an area I know nothing about and it was quick and easy to create a loop and highlighted a break in the loop I had originally planned which would have been a long detour if I only discovered it when on the bike which was nice.

Interesting, however bikehike has OS maps what does this have ? How do you see Bridleways etc ?

There is an option of standard view, Satellite or OSM

So (being harsh) that part is inferior to OS then

I assumed OSM was Ordnance Survey Maps...

Interesting, ta for the heads up.

Handy that it includes more [s]paths[/s] trails than the usual suspects, therefore easier to plot a bit of exploration in unknown areas.

OSM is openstreetmap
It's a crowd sourced system that's not quite as accurate as Ordnance Survey but there or there abouts

No problem, I use open street map on ViewRanger and do a bit of route editing on that. I am a map geek so also have the OS Maps subscription too although its not so good for route planning, I tend to use bikehike

Hope to do a Lordswood ride one day and get to the Bike Park (thanks for all your work it looks great), still don't have a suitable bike friendly car 😐

Just saved my first effort and imported it into Strava as a route to check out tomo morning.

Have been playing with GPX Track imports for a while and think I have the easiest solution sussed. Will add a separate post for anyone interested.

then I have a spare jump bike you can borrow for the day.

do any of these route planners allow you to just type in the distance you want to ride and it plot a route from your start point back to the start? or even between two points but a route of a set distance? Sure i saw one somewhere that does this, i want something quick and easy for when i dont have much time but was to squeeze in a road ride in unfamiliar areas!

Edit... just looked at the first link and you can do it on that! just need to see if it works like ridewithgps with my Wahoo so i get turn by turn directions!

I've mainly been using strava alongside Bing (OS maps) for my plotting lately, but this looks good and will give it a try soon... cheers OP

Hm. Just tried Plotaroute and adopted my usual approach: set the start and end points (with it set to follow roads) and then drag the route to where I want it. Basic stuff. Had to look up their help system in order to see how to do it (turns out to be completely insane) and even then I simply couldn't get it to work.

RideWithGPS still blows the others away for me.

I just clicked at various points along the route I wanted to go and it did the route for me. Seemed easy enough.

Try walklakes.co.uk

You need to login to get 1:25000 OS mapping but you get no spam and the odd request for a donation.

The mapping tools are basic but full screen.

I used plotaroute to make me a route last night, but when i came to ride it i realized it had just plotted me in the middle of no-where not on any roads or paths just a random line! i dont know if this happened in the transition from plotaroute to ridewithgps so it gets synced onto my element or if the route was dodgey from the off. Never experienced it before. Anyone else?

BikeHike is so nearly perfect, it just lacks two things:

1. The ability to save routes (yes, I know this was removed by request)
2. The ability to route off-road - i.e. following bridleways and footpaths (*cough*), which has never worked

Plotaroute seems very good and does the offroad routing, but I'm still switching to bikehike for the dual-map OS view, which is still absolutely unmatched. I think I might use a hybrid of the two.

Yeah, they nearly all do that well 😉

That process works fine if you always work in that linear fashion, which probably means you already know the exact route you want to plan. It's no use for how I plan routes, though. Different strokes and all that… whatever works for whoever.

Just created a route (easy!) and then downloaded the gpx.
Then went to http://labs.strava.com/gpx-to-route/ and it didn't work.

Anyone else test this?

Ee, that's good that is.

Tested it out by asking to suggest some loops from my house, and it gave me roughly the (road) routes I would usually use.

For anyone who is thinking of getting an OS Maps subscription, found out the other day that you can get a year's subscription for £8 using Tesco Clubcard vouchers. Not played a huge amount but seems like you can import gpx files and plan/record routes, and also download areas onto the phone for use offline, which covers my main use cases.

@daern - just checked Bikehike, there's still the option to save a route in several formats.

Routing off-road: I think it uses Google's routing algorithm when you have the "Follow road" option checked. Uncheck it and it just draws a straight line to your new point. Definitely a bit of a pain but no doubt it requires a bit of effort behind the scenes to get that sort of information embedded in the map so that websites like bikehike can use it.
