Hi

I have a Boardman Hyb 8.9. This had a carbon fork but I had to replace it due to excessive cable rub, it was bad.

Anyway i got a fork from a lower specced model the Hyb 8.6 which has an aluminium fork. I thought it would be a straight swap apart from the star fangled nut and is to pm adaptor for the brake caliper.

However I'm pretty sure I am missing a bit that goes on the fork before it goes into the frame.

Please see the link below. My carbon fork I took off looked like this from the bottom of the steerer tube.

https://webimg.secondhandapp.com/w-i-mgl/5cdc58ac387e424bcc06a978

The new fork I have looks like the below image. Just where the shiny bit is at the bottom of the steerer tube.

It seems the carbon fork did not require this extra part so when I took off the carbon fork the only thing at the bottom was a bearing.

I'm pretty sure the new fork I have requires some sort of cup or whatever it's called?

The bearing is stamped with these numbers

TH MR127 1.5 36 x 45 C9

How do I determine what part is missing
Using the part number of the bearing?

Any help would be appreciated and a link to the part I require would be great.

Please note pictures above are not mine. I borrowed from the web.

Thanks

I think I figured it out.

Is it a crown race that's missing?

Are they one size?

The crown race is part of the headset, and generally you can't mix and match them since they are specific to the lower bearing in the headset.

A crown race looks something like this:

The crown race is pressed onto the fork steerer. You usually need to pry it off, either with a specialised tool or (carefully) using a flat blade screwdriver. You should have one on your carbon fork, which you'll need to remove and install on the new alu fork.

Some carbon forks don't have a crown race. Your bike has an FSA Orbit C-40 ACB and there are versions of this without https://www.probikekit.co.uk/cycling-headsets/fsa-orbit-c-40-acb-1-1-8-1.5-headset/11702853.html and with https://www.probikekit.co.uk/cycling-headsets/fsa-orbit-c-40-48-acb-carbon-1-1-8-1.5-headset/11702864.html a crown race. I expect you have the first of these.

I've never had a carbon fork with a moulded race so don't know whether you can or can't use the same headset with a normal crown race. I would guess not.

[Edit]Misread the definitions of those two headsets. Both seem to have crown races. I suggest ignoring me![/Edit]

Many thanks guys.

The carbon fork has a moulded one.

I have just checked. It looks exactly like the picture I linked too. You cant take it off. Part of the carbon fork.

I understand I may have to get a complete headset.

I know a lot more than I did 10 minutes ago.

Thanks a lot.

The first looks like it has a tapered steerer, the second a straight steerer.
Neither look like they have integrated crown races.

You'd need some sort of adapter headset to use the straight steerer fork (and you'd probably want a bike shop to fit it).

I think you'd probably find it easier, and possibly cheaper, to find a tapered steerer fork instead.

Your a hundred percent correct.

I just noticed my carbon fork is tapered whereas the new fork is straight.

I only got the aluminium instead of another carbon because I have a bit of a phobia of carbon forks. Read a few articles I shouldn't have.

I think I may well have to get over my fears and get a carbon fork.

Thanks

Reducer races are available for around a tenner. Just need to find the correct one.

Have s look at Hope headsets. Pretty sure there is a crown race reducer to suit that fork and they sell headsets as individual halves so you could keep the existing top parts.

Many thanks to everyone for the help.

Called a few LBS. One asked me to bring the headset and fork in. He found a reducer after a bit of rummaging around. £10 later job done.

Fork installed and working.
