I ride a 6" travel Pitch with lyriks up front. I push up the road at the end of fly tipperI have an identical bike with the same forks. I can ride back up that. Put some effort in!!!
So can I. I ride a singlespeed during the week. The weekend is for playing - pushing up hills and chatting to your mates while you do so. Put some effort into your pushing man!!!
that cartoon just irritated me as being smug.
Hmmm. I assumed it was a bit of a self-parody by the creator of himself and his mates.
Thanks and sorry to hijack the thread - I think (2) is key and links to me previous points about shrewd people knowing VFM rather than just price!!
Chakaping: could be right there. I didn't really get it.
Surrey's Diary of a mountain biker lot look like a bunch of blokes who enjoy themselves on their vids/pics. No 20ft doubles etc - just getting out there.
I used to ride my GT Lobo uphill
Swet baby jebus that was hard work!

Seems to be the case....
The video made me chuckle, but I'm not fussed about bikes people ride,or how much money they have. Riding bikes is good.
Loved it. Spot on, can't wait til Lostboysaint and Winterfold spot it...
I thought the whole point of mountain biking was to ride up hills as well.
Really?
Nice one Gavin, look what you've started 😉
I live in the surrey hills and my middle name is Crispin! oh dear..... 🙂
I live in London and ride the Surrey Hills every weekend.
I also drive an Audi and have had a carbon full suspension for 3 yrs. Previous bike was a Specialised.
Am I a better rider now - yes.
Is that due to the bike - don't know - probably more due to fitness and confidence.
Will I ever do the gap jumps on "flytipper" or "northern monkey" - probably not.
Does that bother me - no not really - it hurts these days when I fall. I still push myself to improve but to be fair gap jumps are a step too far.
Why the bike - its a vice - you get hooked - mtb'ing is what I look forward to every day of the week. Getting out in the Surrey Hills at 730 on my tod when few others are around is a major de-stresser. Allows me to keep my sanity at work and with the wife and 3 kids. I'd still do it no matter what bike I had - but if its something you enjoy and you are fortunate enough to earn the cash I don't see a problem
Do I look down on other peoples bikes - no - definitely not.
Was the sketch amusing - fantastic - even my wife creased up.
Was it aimed at me - probably in some way - but who cares - I still laughed out loud.
PS - we don't ski - my wife and I used to snowboard a lot but that has stopped - cos of kids and me now in the process of buying a new bike 🙂 !!!!
Nearing middle age (whatever that is), weekend warrior, buying expensive bikes way beyond my ability, many ski trips. Oh dear. Not an investment banker though.
One of the best SH videos about. Dressed in tight lycra shaving each other's legs and looking at their bums, I called the police 😆
Does describe it well, but hey it's Surrey. It's part of the character.
Coming down from Leith Hill on Wednesday night ride there was a guy doing burn outs on the A25 in a Ferrari 458. I'm surprised he didn't have his 6inch carbon FS on the roof.

Amen. I do this, you'll see maybe just one other rider. Tranquil.
One morning on the NDowns (when I lived that way). I was on a solo ride and I came past a few large houses down a lane. At the bottom of a drive was a family who had set up a stall for children in need with lots of homemade squash etc for sale. The parents were there supervising the two young boys. I stopped and bought a few things and chatted for a while. A few glumfaced cyclists rode past – a couple stared and carried on. Pissed me off abit.
These folks were obviously rich but had enough grounding to teach their children about charity from a young age.
That’s Surrey folks for you- some (like the lovely old lady who owns a lot of land around there and is very approachable) are nice and then get you ‘types’ who come down from London to ride.
Hilarious Vid. A work of genius. Links to some of mine too so good publicity 🙂
I'm another 7.30 Sunday morning rider. Just a few of us and the deer on the trails usually. Luverly...
I mostly ride a 120mm bike which copes with anything apart from the bigger gaps (because I don't do them!). There's no denying the Surrey Hills can be a lot of fun and there are new trails appearing every week.
It's easy to knock it because of the area it sits in which inevitably means a fair amount of showing off with bling bikes and uber posh locals standing in the middle of the trails threatening you with their weimaramers. All part of the fun!
and very uber posh locals
I remember the bloke on a bloody nice horse racing up the rocky steep approach to Leith Hill tower. I was 😯 at his recklessness but
as he made it.
soooooo funny,
uber posh locals standing in the middle of the trails threatening you with their weimaramers
would an uber-posh local have a weimaraner?
I thought they were in with the chav crowd nowadays?
I told a mate that they guy in the house at the end of the garden had a couple of weimaraners - his immediate response was "Is he a chav".
He also has an uber-ugly BMW X6, so definitely has chav tendencies.
I have only ridden in surrey a few times and am planning to expore a bit more over xmas when I am off work for a month. Any of you jokers recommend some local mtb groups for a man with a penchant for xc trails who drives a porsche and rides ti? I'll fit right in. I'll be at the back saying, "I'm right behind you!" 😉
would an uber-posh local have a weimaraner?
Yes they do but only the ones that don't have black labs. I have a great bit of helmet cam footage of me being attacked by two just off a private road in Oxshott, Surrey right beside the owners £7m house.
Chav dog of choice in Surrey is still the poor Staff BT with the odd English BT for those with a bit more imagination/ cash (expect a few more in the dog rescue centres after Xmas).

Would it be you I saw in Peaslake a little while back with a 911, bike on roof, looking for a parking space!?
I must confess that cars in my riding group include a Nissan GTR, Aston V8 Vantage and a Merc SLS AMG (none of them can fit their bikes in so have had to buy other cars just to go MTBing)...
Surrey has hills?
Surrey has hills?
Yes it does. We clubbed together and bought some with the return on our hedge fund.
10pmix - yep sounds like me, squeeze a bike in ... just. 🙂

that's hilarious... 😆
I remember watching Eric Clapton grounding the front of his carbon bumper turning a corner. Cringeworthy to hear 😐
TurnerGuy - MemberI thought the whole point of mountain biking was to ride up hills as well
Well, good on you for admitting your mistake.
Yes it does. We clubbed together and bought some with the return on our hedge fund.
Absolutely brilliant.
Yes we have hills. They aren't as big as those in say Scotland, Wales, Lakes or Peak, but the trails here are as technical, and in some cases more technical, than most of what you would find there. Certainly they make trail centres look a piece of p**s. Not sure there are many trail centres or bridleways that have 15ft gap jumps on them.
Still arguing about this....thought it was a great light hearted piss take out of us all - fantastic!
Piss take - of course it is. That's why we're still at it...
I'm organizing a ride next tuesday in the Surrey area for STW members, perhaps we should have a little competition and the person with the worst bike buys the first round at the pub afters... 😀
A response from deep in the Surrey Hills
911 with bike on roof? I bet a lot of folk outside peaslake stores thought 'ah its a all the gear' rather than 'hardworker and he may actually ride good'
I went to chicksands before and the bloke next to me had his bike in his 911! Admittedly it was a convertible which made loading it easier but the roof was up once loaded!
I live near them thar Hills and I get offended when I see an expensive car with a crap bike on the roof. Spend some money you tight wads.
--911 with bike on roof? I bet a lot of folk outside peaslake stores thought 'ah its a all the gear' rather than 'hardworker and he may actually ride good'--
Nope I ride like pants but have a nice car (and nice bike). In fact it cant have been me, I have the convertible and shoehorn the bike into the rear seats, sits next to the weimerama and obligatory blonde that these cars come with. She quaffes champers while I bike, dont you know. 😉
So - In my previous post I admitted to having an audi, riding at weekends, and having a carbon full suss.
I forgot to say - I am also from the north.
You guys have got it in for me. 🙂 🙂
