I got myself some lovely skinwalls for my road bike (pics later), and was putting them on last night.
I got the read tyre done and was working on the front, when all of a sudden, there was an almighty BANG that scared the you-know-what out of my entire household.
Anyway, I looked at the tube I had put in, and realised two things:
1. That it had probably been in the previous tyre for years and had no useful life left, and
2. It was specified for 700 x 23, and my new tyres are 25.
I didn't know that tubes could be so precise as to not be able to handle the difference between 23 and 25.
Oh well. Live and learn. And scare your family in the process. 😀

In which case, I can't believe how lucky I've been. I have put a lot of kms on that bike since I got it a few months ago!
Point 2 is guff: a 25 isn't going to make any tube explode. I suspect point 1 is probably guff, too: even an old tube isn't going to explode in a 25. I'd put good money on you having pumped up the tyre without noticing that a short bit of bead had slipped away from the rim hook, and that the tube bulged out of that without you spotting it. I'll leave you to guess how I know that's easily done 😉 Though I did mine at 7am on a frosty morning in the middle of a sleepy village who probably thought they were waking up to some sort of gun crime.

Agree that it was highly likely the tube was trapped under the bead, or the bead not fully engaged with the rim. A lot of road tubes are 700x 20-28 and I've successfully used them in 35mm CX tyres

Obviously the Puncture Pixies lifted the bead up and allowed the Evil Unicorn to puncture the tube with its horn.

Yes, I had a friend who did that too. Christ, I nearly **** my pants when I pumped it up and the tube popped out. Didn't actually burst, but frantic few seconds until I could let the air out.
Mine didn't burst either, until for some reason I gently touched it with my fing[b]BANG[/b]
You didn't seat the tube under the bead properly. Check the rim carefully, I destroyed a Ksyrium rim once with a blown off tyre. Done it with Latex tubes too, and they blow about half a mile down the road 😯
Happened once at work just as I bent over to check the tyre had seated properly, shart city.

Yep. I was with a mate in his garage as he merrily footpumped away chatting, not noticing the bulge. He wasn't looking at it, I spotted it but before I could get a word out.. BLAM! At least I was prepared, he nearly shit himself.
Old tube wasn't the culprit - the tyre holds the tube in place, so if it holds air then it holds air. Also, tubes do stretch quite a lot in larger tyres. A MTB tube can go as fat as a child's swimming ring easily.
