[Closed] Elliptical single speed chainrings

There have been quite a few folk asking about the elliptical chainrings for single speeds.

I organised a group buy a while ago from BETD goldtech and got a discount for the guys involved, but I don't supply the rings or have anything to do with the shop.

At the moment goldtec have a few rings left in 33, 34, 35 and 36t they're £49.99 a ring.

they're not shown on the website and your best bet is to give the shop a ring.

Just to clarify, I'm cock all to do with the shop and this in the nature of PSA for those that are interested/after a ring.

Oh and yes they're total snake oil, just like biopace and don't work at all (just to stall the usual STW bollards) 😀

Do they come with a stick on beard and a pair of sandles?

Apparently it was this bloke who invented them. He realised they carried more power when thrown if they were oval shaped. He discovered this after making a batch of pizza bases after he'd drunk 10 pints of lambic ale!

I used mine for the first time today and I found it utter codshite. No-one else get one.

(gone +2T on the front compared to my round ring and didn't notice any difference apart from going faster for the same effort - which is good right?)

is the aim to give you more excuses for rests cos you have to keep stopping to put the chain back on?

never dropped a chain with one yet.

you do need to know how to set them up . The special taz instructions I supplied to some new users were rather good though 😆

these rings of wonkyness are clearly intended for attention seeking buffoons, and after buying two,I can confidently state that they don't work at all. my chain never falls off,and I no longer have an excuse to stop halfway up a hill.
I have contacted the Electricity board.

yes, but to be fair keef. It did clearly say that you needed a 104 BCD ( I didn't expect you to take that as Bumhole Circle Diameter)

How did you stretch it that far, did you get fingered by an elephant?

I did a little experimentation with oval rings on suspension bikes, back in the day when pivots were high and shocks platformless.

Worked really well. Evened out power, stopped bobbing.

Biggest load of old tosh I've ever bought into. 😉

I only went up one tooth but reckon I could have gone two.
Any plans stainless ones Tazz ? I reckon a Ti would be out of my meagre budget.

sofaking- it's something they may look at, I have a proto direct mount middleburn uno one and I've got WI crank to take to them so they can have a look at doing one for me.

Swede you've already had a go on my "magical ring" and sold it to others......It came back all worn and out of shape and in need of a good lube.I've still not seen my share of the proceeds either!

Takisawa2- no idea on the stainless front, rather fancy a Ti one so hopefully they'll do a couple for me.

I saw something bonkers on the Leonardi stand at Bespoked Bristol today.. Adjustable sort of elliptical chainrings. Wish I took a picture to show, but basically, they were half round split rings, that you could adjust outward to give you a greater degree of oblongness, in one tooth steps. The more you adjusted them out, the longer the flat section without any teeth. Couldn't see any real world purpose for them, but was impressed with their bonkersness anyway!

if all the 33Toothers are using 32's at the moment I'd really say go to a 34 as 2T up seems to be the optimum increase for the same perceived effort on climbs.

They do work, and here's why: http://www.highpath.net/highpath/cycles/ovals/01.html#how

However, in my experience of using them on a singlespeed, they are not great for this application: a smaller round ring would be better. For multiple rear cogs, they will get you through the dead spots better, and give you an edge when technical climbing. They feel weird for all of about five minutes, after which round rings feel odd and 'dead' like Biopace.

Unfortunately, Chris Bell is not making them any more, so I've been looking for another source.

@tazzymtb: Are Goldtec still making them, and would they be willing to make custom ones do you know?

Doctor Rad, yes they're still doing them, what's left at the moment in the remainder of the first production run.

they'll do custom orders, but it takes a while for a space on the CNC machines (still waiting on some custom fat hubs)

they are tops on a singlespeed as folk like john mylne and ned overend use rotor Q rings for SS race applications. The goldtec ones are even more wonkey and seem to suit SS applications better ( I have both)

Kev at goldtec is ya man for email enquiries

Thanks for the info. Personally, I didn't get on with them on SS, but then I never really got on with the entire SS format when living anywhere other than the flatlands of Cambridge...

How long have you been waiting for your hubs?

cheers folks, I'll go and see the wonderful wonky ring merchants on friday and see what I can sort.

I thinks that lot is it for the 34's until a new batch is made

may be a few 33's and 35's left after this lot of rings go.

Genuine question - How do these work on single speed - do you have to have a chain-tensioner or a really slack chain?

distant memories...My first proper road race bike had biopace chainrings - I think it's generally agreed it was in the wrong phase on some other problem with the concept.

I might have missed this earlier, but what's the biggest size?

Woudn't mind something more manageable than 48 x 16 on the road bike, but don't want to lose too much up top. One of these in 46T or 44T with 104 Bumhole would be ace.

And how eliptical are they? what's the diffence in raduis from long side to short side? I use a Paul's chainkeeper when I've got a cassette on the back. Any way that would still work?

Ta!

Right folks, I've negotiated a group buy price, there's a very limited number of 34t left so those will go to the first folks that asked about them, no issues with 33's or 35's so either MTFU or be a big wussypants on a 33. If everyone who's after one drops me an email to confirm their order and we can sort out money and delivery etc...tazwadie AT HOTmail dot com

would these work with fixed? I've got a high gear (45:15) which is fine for 95% of my commute, but then there's a killer hill at the end which I live just over the top of and I can feel the dead spots slowly breaking my hips/lungs/knees. I would guess it would only work with a tensioner which I don't want to use?

no tensioners needed squire, just a cunning set up with chain tension and yes it works on a fixie and gives a lovely smooth spin

*waits*

*furrows brow and bites lip*

I guess you would just need less ellipticness/ ovality of the ring, so as to not make the slack part of the cycle too slack
