Hi, My new Garmin explore wil not charge to 100 % I can't get it past 86 % . Just wondering if anyone else with this issue ? and possible fix ? Cheers Dave..
The Edge can be fussy too.
Try using it and see if the problem resolves.
My edge had a similar problem - the set points can go a bit awry. Mine used to go to 0% then truck on for another 4 hours.
The fix was run it until it switches off with a dead battery, turn it on a few times (basically get the battery to as dead as it can be) then do the factory reset/button combo and that should do it.
Hang on this is the new explore 2 OP?
If so it sounds like they've carried over the crap battery life features to the new model, the one thing you'd hope they would have fixed...
Does it have a feature to preserve battery life? Charging to 100% is apparently not good for batteries, my phone will only charge to 90% unless you turn the feature off. Just a thought.
Yes it's the New Explore 2 , it does have a feature to preserve battery life but never used it.
Again if it's like the battery saver on the original explore it just turns the screen off until you wake it up.
The battery drain/reset trick described above does seem to help a bit (explore 1) but it's never going to increase the actual battery capacity.
My edge explore 2 also got stuck at 86%
Fixed by running the battery down.
Said it was zero but it was a lie. So keep turning it on until it's totally dead.
Then it leave it to charge overnight.
Also did a full reset.
Mine also doesn't like <2c temperatures.
Bit rubbish really. Cuts out when it's slightly cold.
Sounds just like the original Explore. The reset trick above works but only for a couple of rides IME. Could be a warranty issue.
For some reason my Edge Explore 2 can only charged properly using a usb port on a laptop - If i used my phone charger, it's all over the place, i.e. jump from 86% to 100%, when in fact it's still 86%.
from having looked at the Garmin Blurb a few months back I think the Explore 2 is pitched more at E-bikes, the fact that the "Power bundle" had various options for connection to different eeeb battery/motor systems (STEPS, Bosch, Etc) kind of highlighted it to me, I don't think the original "Explore" was really intended for exploring it's a big display to stick on your eeeb it'll talk to Di2 but not power meters, does pretty good navigation but doesn't have different ride profiles and includes a "guest mode" for handing out with hire bikes...
Thus battery life is pretty much irrelevant when you've got the ultimate power-bank to plug it into...
I think my explore 1 is destined for eBay eventually, I might see if it makes itself useful this summer or not (with a powerbank lashed to the bars) and I'll be shopping about for something with some actual battery life and comparable navigation.
It was a bargain but the battery life really is a fundamental shortcoming if you're just wanting to ride regular bikes and I don't want to be resetting the device on a weekly basis. I reckon I'll be keeping an eye out for edge 530 on discount before too long.

There are 2 options for the Explore 2 - with or without the Power Bundle. And with is hugely expensive compared to without. DC Rainmaker was rather dismissive of the Power Bundle thing saying it was far too complicated and expensive for the vast majority of people, it'd be easier to just use a powerbank.
My Explore 1 now has a fairly woeful battery life - even in full battery save mode (which I hate cos it could easily be mistaken for the unit crashing, which it can and does do on occasion) it'll rarely do more than 8hrs. If you're using it for nav with the screen on, 6hrs is the absolute limit for it now. Pathetic.
I thought the Explore 2 might have fixed that and some of the features on it look great but I'd be hesitant to spend that kind of money if the battery is going to be just as flaky as the original.
My Explore 1 is like this. It will charge to 100% from a powerbank but only 86% on a charger. I have always considered it a Garmin "feature".
