Anyone got a quick car free route from monton to manchester city centre? Have ridden bridgewater canal before but unless it's changed recently it was slow and a load of faff.

If there's no car free options which is the "nicest" reasonably quick route. Currently do monton rd, then through weaste to liverpool st.

Sounds like you go exactly the same way as I did and will be doing again now I don't need the car everyday... Spookily I was looking up the bridgewater as a route to check out just yesterday!

The only other route I think one of the 'route calculators' brought up once was to use eccles new road then cut up to liverpool rd. But knowing what the bus drivers are like on that route thanks but no thanks!

Be interested to see what other answers you get.

When I lived Monton way I used the same bike route into town ...and once walked the same picturesque route home in the early hours of a Sunday when I couldn't find a taxi.

You could take more of the back streets through Seedley, Weaste, Shopping City etc., but I wouldn't bother.

Eccles New Road with its tram tracks weaving about, buses and cars was horrendous to cycle along.

You can continue up Eccles Old Road to the A6, but that's not exactly car-free.

The new road alongside the Ship Canal between the Centenary bridge and Media City and then cutting through the delightful village of Ordsall might be a quieter alternative.

Another option is to ride through Trafford Park and jump onto the canal near Old Trafford (the path becomes better there).

Yes. It has a good cycle path from what I've seen.

Aristotle, cheers will have a look at that. It's a pain got a lovely xc route that I've spent years honing but it's just too muddy for year round commuting and riding in traffic has lost it's allure. Not got the time to go route finding like I used to.

sorry 1 shed you're gonna have to talk me through that one, I had a look but can't find quaker bridge. Not actually monton local, I'm riding from bolton down NCN 55, end up here I currently use monton rd, victoria rd, half edge lane, eccles old rd, meadowgate rd, tootal drive, liverpool st.

Did wonder if there was a nice sustrans type path running parallel to motorway, train line or ship canal but no ๐Ÿ™

d0nk: The route 1shed is talking about is the continuation of NCN55 (took me a few minutes to realise that!) just using Eccles Old Road/Tootal Drive before rejoining NCN55 on Liverpool Rd.

1shed: on a side note, be interested in some local routes, I should know them but only routes I know are all child friendly these days *sigh*...

Sorry didn't realize its a continuation of the route, you don't look at signs on your doorstep. Most riding from my door is a mixture of bike paths linked with cheeky paths not technical but fun. Get one the GM bike maps free. I also ride out with my kids and do some road rides too. Started doing some night rides along the old railway track, join me if you want email in profile. 1 shed

Ah right gotcha 1shed, will give it a go.

Did bridgewater canal last night, definitely a no-goer, worse than I remember tho TBF I think I've only ever done it in summer during dry spells. It's alright for a bimble but no good if you want to go places quickly.

unseen this page says NCN55 goes from bolton to trafford park, just follows the canal after monton, doesn't go into the city. Tho it does look like there's a proposed route into manchester

Looks like bolton council are a bit behind, maps not available online, tut tut

I discovered the same thing. The 'path' is very poor there.

Riding along the roads across Trafford Park is far better and far quicker.
