My son’s new (to him) DH bike has an older set of non boost boxxers. Even with the lightest spring he is not getting anywhere near the full travel, im thinking I’ll need to but a new fork, which given todays prunes will be 2x the price of the bike but that’s another story.
has anybody spotted any deals on DH forks? I’m not even sure in non boost air sprung is a thing… worst case scenario I’ll replace wheel and fork but would rather limit to fork only if possible (it’s an old nukeproof front hub so don’t I can change the spacing to boost)
If he’s really light, I’d go for some beefy air single crowns, though you’ll probably still have to change the hub to a boost one
Travel usage aside, is the spring rate right for the ride characteristics he wants? Support, comfort, something to push against.
Vorsprung has a 2 part discussion of how much travel someone needs -
The takeaway I remember is find the spring rate the rider needs for ride characteristics first, then if bottoming out add tokens or damping or get a longer fork. If not bottoming out, they have more travel than they need.
Don't worry about finding non boost or changing the hub, just use a boost spacer for a tenner off eBay.
If he's that light then single crowns will be fine.
