I am presuming if I want to ditch the dual controls I don't need to buy a full brake set but just a lever/reservoir ? [I already have some seperate shifters ready to go on.] Are there any compatibilty issues with calipers that came with DC and normal levers?

as you say you can use any levers to replace the DC units.

The Deore levers for £20 from CRC each would be a cheap solution.

Yes, but it might actually be cheaper to buy a new set and sell the Dual Controls on eBay. Especially if you're close to getting new pads, need bleed kit etc.
