Have any frame builders tried this? I think you could save some weight and make things a bit simpler if you integrated the mechanics into the seat tube.

Oooh. That looks cool. My idea would be you could have a thin shim/housing holding all the gubbins but the main strength would be from the seat post itself. Looks like the way forward to me.
