atm i am suffering with pretty bad depression/lack of motivation due to various reasons (nightmare neighbours being a big one atm unfortunately but they will be gone by march 28th hopefully).
so as you can guess my fitness is er very lacking atm lol but i would really love to get back into riding again. i love both mtb and road cycling just am not very good at either and very slow unfit (am 48 years old i will add so unfortunately no spring chicken).
i have done 2 rides this year so far (a 16 odd mile road ride very early one sunday morning) and a 25 miler on my mtb not offroad really mostly on the road.
was just wondering if anyone local would be interested in a meet up and ride with a slow unfit numpty?
i remember riding with a group of you about 2010-11 i think around the wandsdyke and cherhill area. it was a really good day (i was just very slow on the ride compared to everyone else lol).
thanks in advance if you have read this rubbish 🙂
I’m up for something? I don’t live in the area but at the moment I am staying in market Lavington for work mon - wed each week til mid March. I take my bike and have been riding from there in the evenings on the Imber range path etc because I don’t know the area. I’ll be a ride partner if you have some local knowledge? Happy to ride and chat too… Up to you! Can’t offer long term, but I will be down there roughly once a month after March…
@bigdaddy ah thanks for sure i would be interested in going out for a ride. unfortunately i am no expert when it comes to riding on salisbury plain i have to admit.
i just usually ride the red horn hill to westbury white horse route only tbh as it is closed off most of the year the other routes. unfortunatly i wouldn't have the fitness to do the whole thing atm as it would be around 30 odd miles inc the ride back to devizes.
i don't have a car so would have to cycle to meet up with you if that was ok with you?
I have a car so I can come to you! Shall we pm to set something up? I’m up for riding anything…
that would be great thank you @bigdaddy 🙂
will pm you my email/mobile number
hopefully the weather might start improving now it is close to spring so nice riding conditions.

Will do mate - conditions have been superb for the last two weeks! I’ve loved the sunset rides! Look forward to meeting up
Happy to be a third wheel and do some road riding or gravel (my only bike at present is a Specialized Diverge). I'm in Melksham. Plenty of routes I can offer up. Happy to come over to Devizes and go as far or as short as wanted. I have no problem going not fast 😉
@roger mellie would definitely like to meet up and go riding with you for sure 🙂
am going to be riding with bigdaddy on monday at 5pm (he is kindly going to pick us up and i think go to salisbury plain riding, unless he wants to go somewhere else?)
i will have to ask him where we are riding tbh as i'm not 100% sure.
you would be most welcome also to join us then or we could arrange another date/time where we could all meet up and go riding
this is turning out to be a great post 🙂
Nice! I can't do Monday unfortunately, but happy to meet up Friday afternoons, Saturdays or Sundays. Just tried to PM you Raceface, but not convinced it's worked!
Bigdaddy, happy to dig out some gpx routes for inspiration if that would be helpful? Evenings are a stretch at the moment.
Cheers
@roger_mellie thanks i would def like to meet up and ride with you for sure 🙂
will send you an email with my email mobile no
thank you 🙂
Hi
I'd be interested in joining you for a nice leisurely (mountain, road or gravel) ride as well if you don't mind me tagging along - I'm a bit further north than you (Malmesbury) but am happy to travel.. I've got lights so could potentially do evenings or weekends 🙂
Cheers
Jon
@jon_n would be happy to meet up for sure when you wanted 🙂
thank you all for your offers of joining us on a ride (and offering to drive to us offer lifts etc) it is extremely kind of you all especially to someone you have never met before too.
maybe one day we could arrange a meet up for all of us to go ride one day (hopefully i might have more fitness then lol)
Have just dropped you a mail - you might want to edit your post and remove your email to prevent the spam bots and weirdos harassing you 🙂
Am based near Yeovil but currently dating a lady who lives near Great Cheverill.
Been for a walk in the land opposite the prison and seems to be a few trails built over there.
@dai1983 ah that would be around pear tree hill if you meant earlstoke prison?
by all accounts there are some good manmade trails/downhills around there. i haven't ridden them myself but have watched a few yt videos of them.
salisbury plain also gives great views too.
would be happy to meet up sometime and go for a ride (but my trail knowledge is embarrassingly bad considering that i have lived here for 48 years now lol). i need to find new routes to ride for sure.
@bigdaddy @jon_n it was great to meet up with you both today and go riding i definitely needed that for sure (for my mental state/fitness or lack of it lol). thank you both for offering to join us it was much appreciated 🙂 we did a 19 mile route on salisbury plain and i was shown a few new trails which was great 🙂
‘Twas a good evening ride, thanks for the company. Always fun for a non local to show a local a few new trails!!
Yup - it was a nice little blast out in the fresh air last night - certainly helped blow a few cobwebs out!
Hopefully we can arrange another one sometime!
I'm in Tidworth and wouldn't mind tagging along if there's another ride happening?
I'm probably older, fatter and slower than all of you but I can find my own way home if I can't keep up 🙂
Better just go out and see what I've got in my legs actually.
@Dorset_Knob would be more than happy to meet up and go riding sometime for sure 🙂
i am due to meet up with @roger_mellie sometime at the weekend to go ride somewhere (he is going to get back to us nearer the time to arrange it with us). very much looking forward to that for sure 🙂
i should have put up a post like this a long time ago.
@roger_mellie thanks for meeting up with us today and going on a nice road ride. it was nice to meet you and chat whilst riding and seeing the great views of wiltshire 🙂
Likewise @racefaceec90 ! Good to have a reason to get out in the fresh air!
Great thread! There used to be trails around Erlestoke, an old SAMS DH track from early 2000s plus used to run the Erlestoke 12 endurance race there too, not been up that way for a long time though.
Howdy folks, inc. @racefaceec90 @jon_n @Dorset_Knob and anyone else who's interested....
I'm pencilling in Sat 30th September/ Sunday 1st October for a ride around Salisbury Plain. (I'm doing an event there the following weekend, so will be good practice!)
If anyone is about, it would be great to meet up. I plan to start south of Urchfont and go clockwise.
No need to commit now, but just throwing it out there for consideration.
If it's not blowing a hoolie, it'll be great. If it is, it'll be 'character building ', or something 😉
The route is hardtail/ gravel bike friendly.
Cheers
@roger_mellie sign me up for that for sure 🙂
do you mean the whole of salisbury plain like a loop of the whole area or just a ride on salisbury plain. if the former i might not be fit enough to do a whole lap of the plain (no idea how big a loop would be tbh either lol)?
i am saving towards some type of gravel bike myself (to add to my ht mtb and road bike collection). unfortunately i won't have it for the ride (will tale a while tbh am thinking between an on one rujo steel gravel bike or a planet x tempest ti gravel bike both with force 1x11 groupset).
if any of you want to go riding before roger's salisbury plain ride am def up for it (am still unfit/slow though lol).
er cough cancel the gravel bike (i er cough just ordered a ps5 as i saw it on special offer er cough)

I was planning on a loop, but not of the whole plain 😀
We can certainly tailor the route to suit. I'll share my suggested route in a few days.
I'll be on a hardtail.
Cheers
Hi
Keep me posted - I may be interested in tagging along...
Is it the Salisbury Plain Glorious Gravel ride you are looking at doing the following weekend? I've got it in my calendar but haven't clicked "buy now" as of yet... I did the Cotswolds one a few months back and really enjoyed it...
Jon
I'm not against the idea, but my 170mm Enduro bike may not be entirely suited 😀

Great. Will do.

Yes, I did it last year but didn't finish the epic/long route by a few Kms so I've got unfinished business with it! (Although the start/ finish point is different this year I think).

I follow someone on strava who did it earlier in the year - it looked like a pretty epic day out...
oh that gravel event looks good i have to say just looked at the web site.
unfortunately i am not fit enough to do a 90km ride offroad so will give it a miss this year but will def try to do it at some point as it is local to us and i would like to ride more of salisbury plain tbh as it is usually closed due to mod.
am looking forward to meeting up with you again though @roger_mellie and anyone else who wants to join us 🙂
Hi folks
Couple of route suggestions for this coming weekend below (other suggestions welcome!)
Sunday 1st is my preference, hope that suits? Say 10am start?
- Either an out and back to the White Horse of 42km https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44591936
- Or a loop towards Enford https://ridewithgps.com/routes/33744686 of 32km. This can be shortened by cutting back across the centre of the plain, reducing the length to 25km. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44592735
All of the above start at the informal parking area on the Imber range perimeter path to the south of Urchfont (parking area on Google maps).
There's no firing scheduled for Sunday on the Larkhill range, but the White Horse route is wholly outside the range anyway I think.
Will suit a hardtail or gravel bike. Would probably be a bit tedious on a 170mm Enduro bike 😉
@racefaceec90 would you like picking up? If so, drop me an email (think you have my address from before).
Cheers!
[edit - mentioning @jon_n as I said I would]
@roger_mellie have sent you a pm message on singletrack (apologies i have forgotten your email address) have my contact details there. a lift would be most welcome thank you 🙂
i have to admit that i haven't ridden since 2nd sept so my fitness is a bit lacking atm (but i know i can do 20-25 miles after not riding for a while).
hopefully it will be dry on sunday.
I probably won't be able to make it - I'm more than likely out on the bike Sat morning so probably won't be too popular if I go out Sunday as well 😉
No worries, thanks jon_n - enjoy your ride!
