I'm after a jersey for commuting that will cover most bases.

I've found an Endura Jetstream with windproof front and sleeves which seems ideal but the fit was a bit off so sent it back. Is there anything else similar that will be good for chilly morning commutes, but can cope when it warms up a bit until its warm enough for a short sleeve.

I like the idea of the windproof panels!

Cheers!

I used to use Altura stuff when I cycle commuted a few years back. It was either a long sleeved thermal base layer, any old jersey and a jacket; or a wind proof base layer, any old jersey and a gilet. I hated commuting in the Spring and Autumn, and ended up taking about two different loads of clothes to either strip off and/or put on depending on how the wether changed. 🙄

You could always look at the knock-off, I mean inspired by weather proof jerseys on aliexpress and see how you get on with one of those...

I have a Gore windproof jacket, with removable sleeves - it has inner short sleeves so you don't get the full wife beater look - which I commute in all year. Great bit of kit, covers so many bases.

I've got an Altura Night Vizion windproof jacket that is great in really cold weather with a base layer and t-shirt underneath and then as it warms up just lose the base layer then eventually the jacket.

Well bright as well!!

Edit: Ooh that Gore one sounds good.

Standard jersey + arm warmers and gilet. When it's a bit cooler add a vest under the jersey.

Castelli Profetto Convertor, but if you struggle with Endura sizing you may well have no hope with Castelli

As above, in these inbetweeny times I prefer to layer up with gilet and arm warmers as you can then drop them for the ride home when it's warmer.    For cooler weather I've done a lot of rides in a Stolen Goat Orkaan since last autumn, that was my go to jersey from 0 to 10 degrees (with base layers when it's cold)

The Gore is the Alp-x Jersey  http://www.wiggle.co.uk/gore-bike-wear-alp-x-pro-windstopper-softshell-zip-off-jersey-blu/

It's not cheap but if you search around you can often find it in a sale somewhere.  I used it for a commute, you can out a base layer underneath for cool mornings, and then just use the jersey with short sleeves on the way home.  Big pockets and the nelson pocket are great for commuting as well

Or the Phantom.

To be honest, on the road I prefer the approach of a short-sleeved jersey plus arm warmers plus a long-sleeved thin (pocketable) shell: either a stretchy windproof one (I have a nice Pearl Izumi one, forget the name) or a water resistant one (I have a nice Gore one, forget the name). Then a full winter jersey for the cold stuff.

I tend to find that's not only more versatile than convertible soft shells, it performs better too. YMMV.

Same as Whitestone,I mostly use a standard jersey with armwarmers and a light gilet if needed .I have found that the Castelli Gabba (short sleave) with arm warmers ,suits me for most of the year.I only stop using it in the middle of summer, but even then I will wear it for late night rides when the temps drop.

Jersey and gilet, with a long sleeve thin base layer for me. Now if I could have ONE commuting-specific feature, it would have to be a chest pocket to keep my wallet/work pass in for easy access on arrival. That would be great. My Mavic raincoat has it, and it is a wonderful convenience, particularly when wearing a rucksack.

I've used my Planet-X Magma a lot for commuting this year so would suggest it's worth a look. Removable arms add to the versatility, that, a gillet and varying the thickness of baselayers has done the job for me in all but the worst weather. Bear in mind the sizing is ambitious, I've an XL and wear medium is pretty much every other top I buy.

For spring and autumn the arm warmers and gilet always worked for me.  At this time of year it often warms up significantly while you're riding in the morning and is warm enough not to need arms and gilet in the evening.

Gore Phantom/Alp-X is a great bit of kit but it's properly warm.  I wear mine with a thin base layer between about 6 and 12C and a thicker base layer when it's cooler.  I've never really used it with the arms off - when it's warm enough to remove the arms the body is still too hot.

One of those^^ your usual top and some arm warmers for when it's really chilly.  Anything really nice will get ruined commuting 🙁

Scaled has it right - the constant wearing and washing and rucksac straps kills commuting kit - I use a base layer in the morning under a gilet and chuck a short sleeve jersey in the bag for the ride home as the afternoon is often warmer

I tend to ride in cheap SS Jerseys for commuting most of the year round, add a LS base layer in early winter/late autumn (plus a full Jacket when it gets really cold).

Add gilet and arm warmers to accommodate variable weather during spring/early Autumn...

Just wear the SS Jersey in summer and have a basic Pack'a'mac in case of a downpour....

But yeah, I don't believe a true "Year round" commuting jersey exists...

Mostly @ Ed and Scaled.. 😉

I have gone the other way with my commute kit.
It used to be that over the cold dark months I would use all my (almost) worn out Summer stuff (supplemented by Lidl buys) and looked like a homeless person that had nicked a bike.

I have a year round 35-40 mile commute and I just thought, bollix to this, life's too short to not be comfortable. Now I just buy quality kit. The money I save over normal commuter costs more than covers it.

Same as cookeaa - LS baselayer under a ss jersey. Depending on how chilly, either a merino blend baselayer or a nice, light Salomon running one (like a second skin). If it's warmer in the afternoon the baselayer gets stuffed in my pack. Never got on with gilets personally.

This is my go to jersey, superb quality and windproof and waterproof, no need for jackets etc. Can be supplemented with the waterproof arm warmers and in the depths of winter I just pop under it a quality thin merino baselayer.
