Was considering the 2014 Salsa El Mar' frame - I've got some cromoto 1 1/8 forks that I'd thought would do but I guess taper would be preferable - I want to run rigid forks and if the standard 1 1/8 cromotos aren't really a good match I'm a little concerned that there's not too many tapered rigid options available - Salsa seem to be the only option - as I've already got the cromotos feel a little reluctant to opt for the tapered versions - to reiterate - do tapered headtubes work perfectly ok with 1 1/8 steerers? Never used an adapter .. Not sure I like the idea as I like bikes to look clean ..
The adapter is inside the HT, no?
You'd never notice without taking the fork out.
As above, absolutely no way you can tell the difference from the outside.
Hmm, I'd don't like the way they look. Crowns on tapered forks are beefier, crowns on 1/8th forks look out of proportion in a tapered headtube.
I think they look terrible! I had a C456 with a straight steerer fork and it just looked naff - fork crown loads smaller than the bottom cup. Did have a very large bottom cup though - other frames may not be so bad.
Work fine, do look a bit silly.
[quote=nickdavies ]I think they look terrible! I had a C456I can see the problem...
Not at all. Re-used my old Fox 36's on my Covert.
Yep, skinny little crown below a fat head tube looks odd.
Nope,
Fox floats in my pivot. I think you have to look fairly closely to notice
Chunky cast ally crown is a different story to skinny steel unicrown, though.
Are the Salsa Grande Cromoto the only Tapered Steel 29er rigid forks?
I've got a 2014 El Mar frame with exotic carbon fork with a 1 1/8th steerer. I have a crown race adapter to run the thinner steerer diameter. The bike looks absolutely fine, small amount of overlap from the bigger bottom headset, but not overly large to make it look out of proportion.
WGAS what it looks like?
Personally I couldn't see much if any difference

Always assumed mine (bought second hand) were tapered until removed to service them. Impossible to tell when fitted
You can get chinese rigid carbon forks with tapered steerer but cant think of any other steel forks that are tapered.
I'm thinking I could live with fitting the 1 1/8 s for now but I'm certain I'd be wanting to "upgrade" to tapered sooner rather than later ..
I had an old pair of RS Revs with 1 1/8" in a tapered carbon headtube for a while. the crown was smaller and just looked out of place.
