I know the latter is newer, but what's the functional difference other than the top button on the hoods?

They feel a bit nicer, shift a bit nicer, look a bit nicer.

Shifters make loads of difference to how well a shift works. I'd much rather have expensive shifters and cheap mechs than the other way around.

Ah, sorry, misread as 8020 and wasn't talking Di2. I've been drinking 🙂

You are indeed correct. The braking on the 8020/8070 is improved over the 685/785 though.

Wasn't there something about the hood covers going baggy on the old stuff which is not the case on the new stuff?

I thought there were mostly RS685s who went baggy?
