I am about to build up a demo DH bike based around the Chumba F5, but to be honest i'm not sure of the best build.

It needs to be light, good enough for UK short courses and perhaps a bit of FR and be a sensible build price wise.

Your input would be welcome ๐Ÿ™‚

last years boxxers (cheep and good)

deore cranks

formula or ringle hubs (both massively underated)

mavic 521 rims

XT shifter, SLX everything else inclding 203mm front brake, 180m rear

hih roller steel bead, sigle ply or dual ply run ghetto

easton EA30 bars/post

controll tech DH stem (light, failry pimp, unusal)

SDG bell air

lock on grips, probably the imperial ones as there'll be a colour to match the frame

wellgo mg-1 pedals

recon you could get all that pretty cheeply.

Guys thanks for the opinions, will keep you posted with what I decide. GW, just out of interest, why not an F5 for UK DH? The F5 suits tight stuff and has a very low CG which makes it pretty manoeuvrable.

MrNutt below is a link to the frame. I have just become the UK distributor for Chumba, so can't wait to get the demo bike built ๐Ÿ™‚

Totems might make the build seem more versatile than the Boxxers. Not sure about the rest of the build - for every part I think of (within reason ) I think of someone I know who would whip it straight off. What's the travel, intended head angle, and weight fo the frame?

s'pose it depends what sort of thing you're calling "UK short course DH" really. if it's 1 minute long not particularly steep tracks 8"+ travel is far more than needed for that sort of thing, short tracks can often mean lots of turns to pedal out of too so if the main goal was to have the fastest bike on that sort of track I'd chose something with a little less travel and a lower BB, just my personal preference tho.

GNARGNAR - out of interest, other than being able to X-up how would totems make it more versatile?

Both coil and air totems are lighter and stiffer than current Boxxers. Air versions have travel adjust. You dont need to be throwing x-ups to benefit from the more nimble handling of single crowns.

180mm of travel would probably be sufficient for most uk dh courses and freeride trails...superfluous extra travel might be a hinderance. Anyway, I said "might seem" considering the chap is asking about speccing a demo bike to sell to as many people as possible and therefore appeal to a wider market .
