Quick question.
Have the deore M596 calipers with the split pin to stop the pads popping out. Seen the better XT method of machined pin.
Guessing this wont work as the deore doesnt have a tapped hole on one end to screw the pin in (assuming this is how it works)
Has anyone managed to replace the split pin for a method that doesnt involve using pliers on the trailside ?

Easy answer is to make sure your pads will last the ride?
Put new pads in at home so you don't need to change them when out? 😉
I carry a new split pin. You can remove the old one hooking it with a small allen key on your multi tool - something I found out won a muddy gritty ride where I didn't check the pads first.
Yes. I put xt pins in mine. Took a bit of force. Im still not sure if that was due to threads on the caliper that were covered in paint or if i just screwed them into the alloy with brute force. Either way, seems fine
Ive never had bother on the trail using a tyre lever to straighten pin and push out.
IMO it's a better engineering solution as it never falls out, unlike the threaded pin. Also 100 split pins costs £2 should you ever lose it.
The xt style retaining screws should have a little spring clip that prevents them falling out.
SLX m675 will take the pins straight off. You can see the threads. I'd assumed deore would also. Good to know they may not be tapped...
Never done it myself but theres no good reason why you cant tap the outboard side with an M4 tap and use XT pins.

Never had to change pads on a ride. Don't take spare pads on a ride. Check my brakes before I go and replace if anywhere near worn out.
Never changed em myself as well. More like a what if scenario. Never happened yet though. Im from an engineering background so just prefer the tool free method really.

You'll find out which it was when you try to unscrew them again 😆
in that case run a rap through and get the pins. They only cost a couple of £. Part numbers should be easy to find as mentioned a bit on here and other MTB sites or just check the google tech docs.

standard M4 thread goes in fine.
Don't forget to check the ID of the hole on the side that needs threading (caliper Outer, hose connection side). I've assumed incorrectly before on something none bike related that as the holes were intending to be tapped they had the correct ID 👿
