1st day back at work today, so yesterday I thought I would strip down and clean my road bike which I use for commuting.
The usual rusted chain and chainrings and the usual road gunk to clean off, but then I noticed the shiny top layer of my rear carbon seat stays appeared to be bubbled and flaking off.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? I dont think it will effect the strength of the carbon, but just worried that now the shiny top layer has gone then more of the road gunk/salt can get to the carbon and may cause further damage.
Should I attempt to sand down and get re-coated?
Ill try and post some pics later.
Had some forks do the same - it was just the laquer peeling off. If the matrix appears undamaged underneath then it's purely cosmetic.... the only caveat here is that you have lost one level of protection from water ingress into the material, but unless your looking to submerge it for extended periods (...I suspect not...) then this isn't really an issue.

Sound like just the laquer. Personally, I'd just ignore it, if it is.
if its the laquer like it sounds then gently chip the loose off and stick some clear tape over it if your concerned, more often than not the shiny layer is purely cosmetic,
I actually quite like the look of the "matt" carbon underneath, I may actually sand it all off, as it looks a bit patchy now.
My own fault for using my good road bike for commuting. I showed the other half and she "almost" agreed I should get a cheap bike for commuting, even better as my road bike wont accept panniers and my work has just started the bike to work scheme. ๐
