Just started it and a couple of chapters in. Enjoying it so far, but haven't got to any of the "interesting" stuff yet.

It is a good read. Well worth parking any preconceptions before reading.

I don't think he came across well at all and seemed to be suggesting that it was inevitable that he would dope.

And blamed his falling out with Brad on the fact that Wiggins didn't join in to try and secure a Champs stage win for Tyler Farrar in the 2009 Tour. Although he conveniently failed to make any mention of HTC and Cav being unbeatable for that last stage.

He called Wiggins out correctly; just cos he's the golden boy doesn't mean he hasn't made a few mistakes.

Wiggins got the chance to shine with Slipstream/Garmin, then dropped them like a stone when Sky came jingling the money bag.

Interesting insight into the whole culture of pro road cycling.
From the narrative, it doesn't like his results got any better when he did dope...

I thought it was a good read and did explain a lot about doping and how it was endemic an difficult to resist.

Lesson learned and progress made!

+1, an excellent cycling book and I thought he did come across very well. The rider by Tim Krabbe is also worth reading.

seemed to be suggesting that it was inevitable that he would dope.

That was the whole point. The culture within the peleton and pressures of the team/sponsors grinds down the will. Which is expressly what he has campaigned to change since. He didnt dope to increase his performance, he doped to maintain that level to meet the demands of the team.

And I thought his fall-out with Wiggins was justified, Wiggins slated Garmin when he signed for sky despite the fact he finished 4th at the TdeF with them ("like leaving Wigan for Manchester United"), and Millar felt let down. Theyve patched things up and both admitted they said things that made the situation worse.

The best cycling book Ive read, possibly the best autobiography.
