is it a crossing? there is something similar on my commute. the cycle route goes from on road cycle lane to shared use path, on the right of the road. It continues to swap sides several times in ~ a mile. Then gets even odder with two parallel signed routes!

why anyone thinks cyclists want that is beyond me.

Where to dump your bike if it's wheels aren't round, it's only got one crank and pedal and your handlebars are fubarred perhaps?

i could use a 'facility' like that on my commute, on a climb where i have to move over from lane 1 to lane 2 (both busy) to carry straight on. The option to pull over and wait would be handy.

but it doesn't look like that's what's happening, so i'm going to have a wild, bordering on daft, guess:

is it a resting area? - half way up a hill?

Yep, usual stuff - local council gets given x amount of money or x% of transport budget to spend on "green initiatives" so painting a few cycle symbols on the roads fits the bill nicely.

Worst thing is it's actually entirely counter-productive. Bez off here wrote a good article on his blog about it

I reckon it's a cyclist picnic area. Where you can pull over and eat that squashed pasty that's in your jersey pocket.

I think it leads to a slightly overgrown path on the left.
